Hi Everyone,
I could really do with some advice whether you were diagnosed with Type 1 or 2 please.

I have a strong family history of diabetes. My mother was gestational, then developed Type 2, she passed away last year aged 51 through complications - Massive heart attack 3 days after a below the knee amputation.
My brother was diagnosed aged 16 with Type 1, hit him very hard & he rebelled refusing to take his insulin, BS's were about 33 - 35, i know Yikes!! Now he's 29 and so far had eyes lasered numerous times, no muscle mass left, stress fractures in both feet, complete kidney failure - awaiting kidney and pancreas transplant, high blood pressure, Underactive Thyroid. Poor guy is basically falling to pieces. So with all this my turn.
While pregnant 6 years ago i was nearly had gestational diabetes, but i managed to prevent that thankfully. About 8 months after the birth i was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, then with an Underactive Thyroid, then saw a Gastroenterologist for Crohn's Disease symptoms (no evidence of the disease, but medicated anyway - definately helps!!), then Arthritis in my joints, my right shoulder i have Calcific Tendonitis (Bursitis) which i get corticosteroid injections - excrutiatingly painful.
Now, the hospital have sent me a letter saying my glucose levels are raised. Over the last 4 weeks i'm only 2lbs off losing a stone, had bad headaches, thirsty & loo trips increased, feel absolutely starving - i've never known a hunger like it, agonising stomach pains which radiate through to my back and so irritable i'm surprised i've still got a husband!

My brother sent me a glucose monitor, i've tested myself previously and it's always been about 4, but my highest to date over the last couple of weeks has been 14.5, i nearly fell off my chair!

So, from my symptoms does it sound like Type 1 or 2? Thank you in advance

Thanks for that fast reply. Just had my fasting bloods done at the doctors, I've got Rheumatology a little bit later today too.
When you say about cutting back on the carbs, i know white bread, pasta etc are refined carbs, what about the wholemeal versions they are complex carbs aren't they. Are they any better? Then again, my other problem is the Crohn's, veg, bran and wholemeal don't do that problem any good, i can't leave the house basically.
Anymore advice will be greatfully received. thanks

Hi Paperdos

I suggest you ask for a c-peptide test to help identify whether you have type I. Sounds like you're under hospital specialists for your other conditions - ask them to refer you to the specialist diabetes clinic rather than asking your GP to handle your diabetes. You can justify this because of your combination of conditions, but I recommend it because some GPs just seem to guess about type I/type II. With your family history of both types, this is no time for guesswork. You need input from specialists experienced in managing this combination, not a practice nurse who's done a half-day course LOL. Crohn's and underactive thyroid are autoimmune conditions like type I - if you have type I and they put you on oral meds these won't work and you could deteriorate rapidly.

Your brother has given you a good example of what NOT to do! Whatever type of diabetes you have, you need to take control if it before it takes control of your life with the complications.

Good luck!
Sue

Thank you so much for your input Sue. Since my last posting earlier today I have been told i'm diabetic, from my Rheumatologist of all people! I called my GP surgery to let them know & they've got me booked in tomorrow morning with the Diabetic Nurse.
Another point I forgot to mention earlier was that i am overweight and have been since having my son just over 5 years ago now, so, i think they're presuming that i have Type 2 at least that's what the Rheumatologist said. But, i also have a fatty liver which i'm being tested for Hepatitis as well.

I'd be grateful Sue if given this info that i've just added, would you still recommend asking to be seen by a specialist rather than just the Diabetic Nurse? I'll definately ask the Diabetic Nurse about the C-Peptide test.

Trust me, with the realisation that i definately have the condition it's not going to ruin and rule my life like it did with my late mother! No chance.

Again i look forward to any other advice, thanks.

You still have a combination of conditions, best handled by someone with experience of similar combination. IMHO its even more important to clarify what type you have in view of your weight, you're in danger of being the victim of an assumption. You may be lucky and find your GP diabetes nurse is a specialist DSN who's worked in a large diabetic unit, but if it's the practice nurse with a different hat on she'll be out of her depth. She may well suggest referring you anyway but if not I'd ask.

If you look back through the posts you'll see there was someone on here recently, whose name I can't remember. Diagnosed as type I, given insulin but blood sugars didn't settle as expected. A practice nurse therefore decided (without any tests) she must be type II, and didn't need insulin. She was in intensive care soon afer.

Forgive my cynical attitude, but in 35 years of type I, I've heard some awful rubbish. I suspect this happens because the nurse in question didn't know the answer to my problem, therefore insisted the problem didn't exist and I was simply "non-compliant". With your combination of conditions, I foresee this happening with a less experienced nurse/GP. Don't get me started on the idea of being "managed" by a pharmacist.....

Yes i see your point Sue. I have to admit i don't know what IMHO is? I tried having a guess but i really don't know could you or someone else help me with that, thanks.
I've got a suspicion that the GP's nurse does put on a different hat because the receptionist told me the diabetic nurse is in every day. They've only got one treatment room so i suspect she does a bit of everything. I'll check with her just to make sure.

I feel like i've learned loads already. I have to admit with all my other conditions & problems does make me wary of doctors, even specialists, nobody has all the answers and as far as the Crohn's is concerned they've all said "I don't know what to diagnose you with, we've found no evidence to prove it's Crohn's, but you're obviously suffering daily" Pentasa commenced from there, which does help a lot.

I'll have a good look through the other posts to see others experiences in a similar postition. thanks

I'd like to back up what others have said about getting tests done to find out for definite what Type of diabetes you have. Don't be like me and just let a D.N. guess at this.(Mine told me I was Type 2). When I think back I can now clearly remember asking my D.N. if she was sure mine wasn't Type 1, as I had alopecia areata and what I believed to be the start of vitiligo on my arm. I researched and found those both to be auto-immune diseases and with Type 1 also being auto-immune, that's why I queried it. My D.N. did not look into this and here I am five years later with a diagnosis of Type 1. My advice...research and INSIST on every test or whatever you feel should have.Do not let your D.N. guess.
All the best, chocoholic.

I am so glad i discovered this site, although my brother has been type 1 for over 10 years i've learned more since browsing this site than those 10 years. I will definately take the bull by the horns & get that C-Peptide test, i do agree about the autoimmune diseases.
Who else is collecting autoimmune diseases as though they were stamps! If you don't try to be positive you'd break down and cry & i don't want to do that.

I saw my mother deteriorate, the only thing i'm thankful for i didn't travel over 7 hours to see her with an amputated leg just to travel back home & be told she passed away. She was my best friend but she never took any advice that was good for her. I will. I have a 5 year old & there's no way i'd leave him. Enough of being morbid. Life is for living & that's exactly what i'm going to do!

Any tips on what foods or drinks to definately avoid would be much appreciated. Chocoholic, wicked username but there's no way i'll be having the chocolate laced with laxatives (sorbitol), whoever thought of that idea is sick in the head, cruel or what! :!:
