Hi, first time using so please be gentle.

I have been diabetic for 30 years. I was hypo at my son's school and knew I wasn't well and therefore left a meet the teacher meeting. I meet a teacher I don't know who would let me leave by the door I was by because she had locked it (the door wasn't alarmed and was easy to unlock/relock).

Unfortunately not a good hypo and not myself - very snappy. Teacher said I couldn't leave by door and in my opinion was very rude. I told her twice I am insulin dependent diabetic/hypo and needed to leave. After an exchange she allowed me to leave after telling me I was a disgrace as a parent.

I have put a complaint into school on how I was treated and have said my symptons are there and made clear unwell etc. Really concerned now that I am going to have a referral made to Children services and have my son taken from me and wondered if anyone else has had an issue anything like mine.

Any advice gratefully received.

I'm sure once your complaint has been received by the school they will understand your situation more, still this doesn't excuse what the teacher said and they should have unlocked the door and said nothing.

No experience to offer but you could try ringing Diabetes UK who may you offer you some advice, good luck!

situation could of been handled alot better, but, a reminder for anyone susceptible to hypos to always carry fast acting glucose on their person, either drink or tab form or even sugary sweets. Imagine you got out the door in question and collapsed somewhere no one could see you.

Very sorry to hear what happened to you. As a teacher with type 1, I've had to deal with very unsympathetic colleagues at times when hypo. I always carry lucozade on me wherever I go. I'm sure school will understand but agree that Diabetes UK should be able to support you if needs be. All the best.
