Advice please

Hi I have a 9 yr old daughter diagnosed at 6 been pumping just over 1and a half yrs, in general control is good but at school her levels vary and she for some reason won't tell Me if she goes low to the point that she's lying about hypos. She Is in yr 5 and we are trying hard to give her some independence and she carb counts well I just don't get why she hides things and doesn't like to talk about her type1. I get she doesn't want to be different but she knows I need to know her patterns to control the pump......do I teach her how to manage basals or go back to her teacher speaking for her? Is she just in denial or rebelling because at school she can almost pretend its not there....

Hi, do you think it would be worth her talking to one of the counselors that the DSN have available to them. Maybe talking to a stranger would help. I have a soon to be 9yr old who is hopefully going to pump soon so I know the age group. Mine has also started to say I don't want my injection in front of people when 1 month ago she couldn't have cared less. She says everyone doesn't need to know, I keep telling her that there is nothing to be embarrassed about, easy for me to say eh! If it would help she could pm my daughter and chat to her if you like. My daughter has not spoken to any other child her age/sex/condition so it may be nice for them to compare notes if you are interested pm me. Hope things improve

Thanks I will ask her.I have no idea about counselling through the Dsn but will ask.Jess Is the same about other people looking she gets really upset if people stare,she doesn't like anyone watching her test either..its so hard for them:cry:

I remember that age and I rebelled. I didn't want anyone to know and never share any problems with my family or friends, just tried to carry on as normal but it wasn't that simple. I would suggest talking to a DSN to advise you of ways on how to approach the subject.

I'm not a parent of a diabetic child, but I am a retired teacher, so I know something about children in general. they Hate to be different from their friends. Perhaps contacting Diabetes UK and introducing your daughter to other T1 children through their children's groups might make you child feel a bit less different and more included.

PS have you ever seen kids on a Non-uniform day at school? they all dress alike anyway.
