Age discrimination.

Hi Carbo,

I still cannot understand how a nurse can make this decision. Of coarse age can relate to refuse certain operations.

I would strongly recommend you see your doctor for proper advice.

So if her advice is right then I would love to know what she says to Type1's when they get older. Does she expect them to stop insulin?

I know of two Type2's who started insulin in their 79th year. It is more than likely that she will be unable to explain what you need to do. As for the operation, what was the excuse given to you?

Very often people think they are seeing a Diabetes Specialist Nurse at their G.P.'s surgery. It is usually a Nurse with little experience of diabetes and some seem to make it up as they go along.

Go and see your G.P. and repeat what she has said to you.

Hi I agree with Catherine :thumbup: and I am Type 1 :cry: Please go and talk with yor GP, what a shocking way to be treated :x Best wishes RRB

A friend of mine is now in his seventies and he is type 2 and got started on insulin (aswell as his tablets) last year. He now has a combination of insulin and tablets instead of only being on tablets. My dad is 64 and was diagnosed type 2 just over 2yrs ago. He was on tablets to begin with and has also got to take insulin since the beginning of this year. So he is on tablets AND insulin now. I think the nurse is speaking nonsense. Make an appt to see your diabetic specialist doctor to talk your treatment through. Sometimes i wonder if some of the nurses have had any training to be diabetes nurses to be honest cos some are totally clueless!!! Good luck :shock: :?

Hi I'm almost 60 & am type 2 on tablets for 8 years & insulin 3 weeks ago. Had 2 operations 3 years ago that probably saved my life - how can this nurse justify what she said. Only your Dr can advise you on that. It makes no sense at all that anyone should be deprived of medical care because of their age. I'm sorry you were treated so badly.

I think my response to being told I am 'too old' for anything ... would be ... "Please tell me why I'm too old for ..." It may well be that there are real reasons why we're too old for some things but no real reasons why we're not too old for other things.

So my advice would be to ask that question of your GP not your DN.

I get sick of clinicians making blase statements to patients without a word of explanation and it's about time the GP appointment was lengthened to 20 minutes - 10 mins for the doctor to talk and 10 minutes for the patient to talk. At the moment that 10 minute appointment is VERY ONESIDED. roblem:

Hi Carbo. It's a real shame older people are being treated the way they are by the NHS. Always just about the numbers... :thumbdown:
