Alcohol?

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 3 weeks ago. I've sort of known for about a year, but, my own fault, I buried my head in the sand until I had a 'well woman check' and it all came out! Its all been a bit scary since then, the nurses and doctors seemed a little bit over anxious seeing as I've known for a year but I have not had a day in my life that I've felt poorly. That said, I realise I'm lucky they are so over zealous. For the time being I have been given one metformin for one week, two for the next week and four a day for the third week. I have had no problem whatsoever giving up 'sugary' things. And, I've given up alcohol (I'm no big drinker by any means, well within the 14 units a week). BUT, high days and holidays I like a vodka and coke. All the advice on Metformin says NO ALCOHOL.............. Is that absolutely no alcohol, or could I have a drink within reason. I only ask as I have a holiday coming up and a lovely birthday celebration and I would prefer not to be tee total :-(

Well, I'd ditch the metformin and drink the vodka with a diet coke. Only I don't drink and anyway you may need to be taking meds. Someone will have some practical advice in a mo.
Enjoy the birthday fun.

I take 3x500mg Metformin a day, and I drink Alcohol.

I don't drink a huge amount, but I have shared two bottles of wine with HID some evenings

The thing is people will come on and say it is up to you or they drink and are ok still taking meds.
Metformin say no alcohol and there must be a reason for this
I wouldn't but it's your life to make that decision though the is plenty of alternatives, and if you act a bit silly with alcohol just swallow down your non alcoholic drink and act like it has made you the craziest person in the room

Thank you for the replies. I suppose I already knew its my choice. And alcohol was never going to be as good for me as a carrot. But did sort of hope I might be able to enjoy some things....
And Shar67, I'm afraid I am usually the craziest person in the room, with or without alcohol!
