Yes. I think you should have 3 monthly HbA1c tests until your number is well down into the 30s. You may not be overweight but you could have some fat around your organs, which is affecting your BG levels. Your fasting BG should be a bit lower than 6.2, say, in the 5s. Your post meal reading should be no more than 2 points higher than your pre meal reading. I suggest reducing your carbs and following an eating plan that would follow if you had prediabetes. Let us know if you need some info about that. The prediabetes range is 42-47 so you are right on the borderline. It's good that this was picked up early and you can do something about it.As this was a 12 month follow up of a previous HbA1c which was also 41 my then dr said I was prediabetic and 'watch your diet' as the numbers would rise. I also have hypertension [controlled]. My current dr told me not to worry and not to bother with another test as I was perfectly well and certainly not overweight. I did however buy myself a meter although I don't often use it. When I do use it I frequently get a fasting reading of 6.2 but until now I haven't bothered doing a post meal reading. Now I find that 2 hrs post prandial I get a reading of 9.8 mmol. Should I be worried? I have a routine medicine review appointment in ten days time, for asthma and hypertension. Do you think I should ask for a further blood test ?
I will tag @daisy1 as I think her newbie info would be a good refresher for you regarding BG testing. Good luck with your appointment, and hopefully this time your GP will take things a bit more seriously.I have followed many of the threads on this site so have some idea of where this is heading. I also know what I should try and do about it - it's just doing it ! I didn't realise I should have taken a pre meal reading actually, I thought it was the post meal [2 hrs] that was the important one?
I had an NHS health check in Feb 2013 where they found I had hypertension and also this HbA1c of 41mmol. They never said anything about that; just the hypertension, and borderline high cholesterol as well. It was only months later when I was able to get my medical notes online that I saw the significance of this and my then dr gave me a further test - with the same result. That was Jan,2014 and since then I've not had another. So I will ask when I go in ten days.
Yes do ask for tests and ask for a printout of results for your own info and records. BP should be under 130/80 in diabetics, so ask for 24 hour testing and probably medication as soon as possible.Thank you Daisy. I do need to go back to basics regarding the carb counting. Before dinner tonight I had a reading of 6.5 and 2 hrs later it was 8.5. I do think I must ask for another A1c test, cholesterol too perhaps when I have a medicine review appt next week. My blood pressure has gone through the roof too over the past month which I find alarming.
