Am I pre-diabetic?

I've been following a LCHF diet fairly religiously for 4+ years and managed to go drop from 16.5 stone (unfit) to 14.2 stone within 6 months. I am now about 16 stone but significantly fitter and stronger. I am 45 years old. I have a waist (widest point) to height ratio of 0.51. Whilst walking through Boots the other day I thought I'd buy a blood glucose monitoring meter (TrueMetricAir, not listed on you site during set-up). I have been testing my fasting blood glucose consistently for the past week and find it is always around 6.2 at 8.30am which is pre-diabetic according to the handbook. After a low-carb breakfast my blood sugars increase to 6.3-6.5 and then drop to low 5's within 60-90 mins of eating. I had not exercised the night before and ate my last meal around 7pm. Am I pre-diabetic?

Firstly you are to be congratulated on losing weight and gaining fitness especially when it comes to waist size which is best being half your height. You may need to lose further fat from your middle to prevent or reverse any diabetes.
Secondly, the only reliable way to know if you have hit the pre diabetes range is to go and get your 12 week average blood glucose done by your GP (the HBA1c) as this is the equivalent of the mean average of 300,000 blood tests. It measures the amount of glucose stuck to the haemoglobin in your blood so is a direct proxy for the amount of glucose on average going through your blood 24/7.
A fasting blood glucose is useful but not as reliable as the above because it is a snapshot and you may well have dawn phenomemon (a natural surge in bg at dawn) or indeed by p re diabetic but you can't really tell from just this.
Good luck and let us know how you get on.
