I have exactly the same experience, but I find it difficult to get the professionals to discuss the results I am getting. I was diagnosed with Type 1 nearly three years ago.
I take 2 units of Levemir in the morning and 10 units at night. If I take any quick acting insulin, I use a ratio of 0.5 to 10 gramme of carb intake. However, in general I tend to keep my carbs less than 40gm at any particular meal, and at that level I ignore quick acting altogether.
I keep very active - golf, garden, walking, and exercise bike - and that seems to work in controlling my blood sugar.
My short-term and long-term blood control is perfect, and regardless of what I do, and my blood sugar always measures in single digits. My readings are always in the range of 3.9 to 7.7, the lower reading usually after heavy activity.
