Hi everyone

I'm a 52 year old male and was diagnosed with Type-2 Diabetes a week ago. I had the fasting glucose tolerance test at my Doctors and the reading came back at 12.6. The nurse told me that this was quite high and I needed to go on Metformin immeadiately. That in itself came as a shock but since then I'm constantly being told by people that I should have tried diet first and to be honest it really is annoying even though everyone means well. I'm hardly overweight at all. Could someone please advise me, is 12.6 really high and if not why would I be put on medications straight away.

Many thanks

Ian

Hi JimIan and welcome to the forum As far as I know diagnosis of diabetes from a GTT test is from a level of 11.1 and above. I was put straight on Metformin too but I can't compare with your results as I wasn't given a GTT test. Other members will probably come along soon with some more information based on their own experiences. Diet doesn't necessarily mean weight loss, just eating the best way you can to keep your levels reasonable. Here is some information to get you started which we give to new members. I hope it is helpful to you. Come back and ask as many questions as you like as there is always someone here to help.

Thanks Daisy1

You are absolutely correct of course about the diet. I do actually have a pretty good diet and eat more fresh foods than processed, I must say though that this Diabetes thing is awfully confusing and the more I've read the more confused I am.

Best wishes
Ian
