Hi All,

After a long 6 months, 3 heart procedures (Stenting), 2 MI's and a lot of worry, they finally told me i was also a diabetic (T2). Not the best news i've ever had, but a relief to finally understand why i needed to keep being admitted for further stenting!!

I've been given a fair amount of 'rushed' advice at my GP practice, who have allegedly booked Eye Test, and Desmonds, and did actually arrange a dietician.

I don't know what levels any of the blood tests were (Both fasting) or the GTT, suffice to say i was told 'you're a diabetic'.

I did ask if i needed to self test and was told No, and wondered if this was correct?

The Nurse did elaborate by saying we will wait to see the results of the H1 test!! I just thought that it doesn't matter what the result was, that i would need to know the levels whether diet controlled or medication controlled.

Finally is there a 'cut off' before diet moves to medication??

Thanks in advance for any responses, good luck to you all.

Well after researching over the last few days and a trip to the GP to discuss my latest heart procedure, while i was there i mentioned self testing, and hit the NO NEED answer.

I then raised the fact that i want to be involved in the management of my T2, that NICE recommend self testing as part of a total management solution, that the Hba1c is an average, and i wanted to test frequently at first until i could identify what causes my highs etc. Also mentioned that community discussion amongst T2's leans heavily towards frequent early testing with probable reduced testing once we can ID the foods affecting levels.

Still NO JOY. :x

GP Insists daily measuring is not required, and Hba1c is more than ample :!:

Finally, after to-ing and fro-ing got her to agree that i would discuss at my Desmond's appt (whenever that is), and we'll take it from there.

Therefore will have to obtain suitable monitor myself and pay for the strips.

I also found that other T2's in the practice are treated the same way, even with different doctors :x

I, unfortunately seem to be in a practice that wants to save money or just thinks we're all idiots and can't help ourselves

Anyway thanks for reading my rant, sorry for the moan.

I'd also like to say thanks to all the people who post on this site, as i have found a lot of useful info here, and will certainly be a regular visitor.

All the best

Tony
