hi charlotte,
I'm happy to say welcome to the forum
I'm not so happy to welcome you to the wonderful world of diabetes.
the first thing you need to know is that stress affects blood sugars.
so the more you get stressed out about it the more erratic your
blood sugars can become - and this in turn won't help the doctors
sort out your treatment plan.
The doctors will be cautious with your insulin dose to begin with to
avoid any nasty hypos (low blood sugar). Eventually they'll tweek your
doses and you'll start to see some more reasonable sugar levels and
start to feel better again.
Don't worry about the highs at this stage - i spent the whole of
the 90's at 13+ and my head never fell off.(everything else did though  )
all the best,
timo
