I have been paddling for a few years now and love it. At the moment I am paddling 12 miles in about 31/2 to 4 hours, depending on the wind at the local loch, Loch Ken. You can not cheat at paddling, once you are on the move, that is it, you are the master of your own destiny. Which is why I have a jam sandwich and plenty of water with me.

It is great to explore the shoreline which changes with the seasons.

I've done a fair bit of kayaking over my lifetime, both before and after diagnosi with type 1 aged 30 years. A few longish tours eg Caledonian Canal, Sudbury to Sea (East Anglia) and lots on River Cam until I left Cambridge nearly 3 years ago. Most important tip is to have a bouyancy aid with pockets, so can reach blood glucose meter and sweets (in plastic bags) without having to scrabble under spraydeck.

I would love to do the Caledonian canoe trail but I don't think I ever will. I only paddle on flat water and I am happy with that. I have just bought a new PFD with a pouch in the back for a hydration bladder, which I have yet to try.
