The hardest thing I have found with my own diabetes regime and routine .
Is it is impossible to have a day off or a break from it .

It is with us 24/7 never allows us a holiday or vacation from it !
Its the little things - like cant go out for the day without my handbag
or car full of kit , meter etc .
Making gap or stop in the day to test/check my BG levels .
Do my insulin shots and tweak things around when ill , other things impact etc
Watch all eat and plan/shop meals ahead .

Can still recall the sense of freedom I used to have .

How do you adapt with a sense of frustration or weariness from it all ?
Am interested to hear about .

After almost 7 years...........I don't even really give it a second thought. It's just normal now!

Yes and I haven't been diagnosed for that long I think it is just dawning on me that Diabetes is for live not just for Christmas.

anna, couldn't you of used another word other than break I'm going off to find one.........................

With other ailments and conditions we can get told take it easy or
take a break from it all etc
Forget things and take time out etc

Diabetes ? No chance .
Its there 24/7 doing its own 'thing' isn't it ?

Often wish science could work out a switch the insulin
supply circuit back on again magic cure for all types of diabetic persons .

solution

Ha ha - know what you mean
You have certainly had more than your fair share of breaks eh
(broke your arm recently)

Seriously though, I was thinking today about the Christmas period, when non diabetics can just pick at the Roses and Quality street, eat as many as they like, open the Pringles, have a drink (or a few) no testing, no injections, or hypo's or hypers, just one day off from the madness of diabetes would be a wonderful Christmas present.
Might ask Santa next year, as I think I've left it too late now

i will struggle over christmas with not being able to eat all the nice goodies

Few diabetics 'do' actually have a couple of days off .
Xmas Day and Boxing Day going hyper ranges easily .
Understandable as only human and wish to have a treat etc.

We did have a discussion on this yonks ago .
It will be in pile of old posts/threads .
Will have a rummage and see if can find it .

I do find Christmas difficult - all those special foods advertised and in shops - desserts to die for (sadly literally in diabetes case - brave but warped attempt at humour ).Specialty coffees and hot chocolate - while i attempt to substitute with fruit infused unsweeted tea and low fat greek yoghurt with blueberries or raspberries - very nice just as it is 345 days a year ha!ha! Actually i cope well most of the time! Once in a while i think to h**l with it i pick up choc chip muffin - but my conscience makes me put it back again (untouched by human hand i hasten to add )! Yes, that's me, recovering chocoholic

Well done you ..
It isn't always easy to do either .

Totally get where you are coming from .
We get it all pushed in our faces at xmas time .
Even on TV adverts every night .

I'd merrily pack my diabetes away in a package wrapped in brown paper and string ( I sound like Julie Andrews) and stick it under the Christmas tree so I could have a few glasses of wine without risking hypos and have a few mindless nibbley things without working out the carb value and deciding whether I need to bolus for them or not.

The thought of having to consider everything I eat just puts me off bothering with snacks or chocolates, I always think "is it really worth the insulin" and the majority of the time the answer is a definite no. I bet I'd still be carb counting in my head on a day off after all the years I've had it !

A bit like a marriage, that's it, you've had enough with a possible trial separation ?

Make a rule to never let diabetes get me down, but the idea of a day off sounds great.................if only

That's what day dreaming if for..................

I do think the day is fast approaching where we will get more than one day off, the research into stem cell therapy is gathering momentum and the outlook looks promising

Always hopeful noblehead. Wouldn't it be great if we woke up on Christmas morning, and there in our stocking, was the cure that would end all diabetes

It would be the best present ever, when you've had the condition for a long time you do forget what life was like before.

I think everyone deserves a day off sometimes just to have a little treat but probably more difficult for T1's Hopefully we will all have a day off on Christmas Day
