Sorry I know its not a diabetes question but Im struggling to find anyone that can give me information.

Ive been having kidney pain for some time now, had a scan and they found something small on my right kidney.

Never heard anything back from doc so just thought is wasnt anything to worry about.
The other day I got letter sending me for another scan!! as I said no word at all from the doc.

So I rang them and was told theres what looks like a cyst on my kidney and they want another scan to see if its got any bigger?

Its only been 2 mths since the first scan, so should I be worried?

Is it normal to be sent for another scan? I really worried that they are not sure what it is!

Thanks for any help.

I had to have some kidney ultrasounds, X-rays and cat scans when having problems with kidney stones, and the ultrasound scan showed a fair-sized cyst on one kidney, about which they didn't seem bothered at all. When I asked why, I was told that simple cysts in kidneys are fairly common and usually give no trouble and require no action. If you are having kidney pain and there is no obvious cause, they will doubtless want to keep an eye on any cysts you may have to make sure they are benign, and that may be why they have recalled you for a second scan. I wouldn't worry too much at this stage. Hope they find the cause, and that it's easily dealt with.

I had a 7cm water filled cyst on my kidney last year. About 25% of people over 50 have them but they go mostly undiagnosed. The vast majority are only spotted due to the increase in scans for other problems, which was exactly how mine came to be noticed. I elected to have mine drained under local anaesthetic to see if it alleviated some other symptoms I was suffering at the time. It didn't, and a further scan 6 months later showed that it had reformed. It doesn't cause me any discomfort so the plan is to keep an eye on it every 6 months or so.

I have several, and some on my liver.

The doctor has told me they are of no concern and are best left alone.

Mine were found when I had a kidney scan for another matter.
