I'm off travelling to South America for a few months and have only had type 1 for a year but don't want it to stop me doing anything I want. Does anyone have and advice for traverling or been traverling with it??? Any advice is good advice. Thanks
The following article just about covers it all, the only thing I'd add is to take along a copy of your repeat prescription in case you need to show this to a Dr/Pharmacist should you need urgent medical supplies:
My advice is just to make sure, you are prepared medically, there shouldn't be any worry's as long as you have prepared your self. Anytime i went somewhere i knew i was going to be walking or hiking, i always keep my blood sugars the tiniest bit higher just so i felt i had a longer time to do my exploring before i had to check my blood sugar, or got a low BS.
I always take double what I think I'll need and just test more and you'll get a feel for it, also if your wearing a pump then you might want a letter saying it can't go through the x ray machine, also if your on a pump or pen often your allowed a spare one
I've just done some weeks in Cambodia, so don't let it stop you !!!
Thanks really helpful everyone! I've got a really good cool bag that keeps my supplies cool for 24h or more. Has anyone found what's it's like keeping spare insulin in a hostel fridge hopefully will be ok with that your the staff fridge?
I normally just keep it in what's called a frio wallet, you do have to recharge them by soaking them in water for around 5-10mins but that kept my insulin in it cool and it didn't go off at all for 3 weeks
but I'm sure they will be fine, if in doubt just take a little tuperware box and you can put your insulin in there then in the fridge
