I am attending a diabetes "Event" in Birmingham on Wednesday.
This is short notice, but here's the agenda and does anyone have a point they'd like me to try to put?

Oranisation of care( where do you want to receive your care? what is important? what information do you want?

Getting involved in your care- What would help you feel more involved?

Self care Support- What help do you receive and what would help you manage better?

Prevention of Diabetes- how do you think servics could be better organised to help prevent diabetes?

Why is there a degree of "pot luck" with regards to PCT policy on regular self-testing for Type One and Two's? Why is there not a blanket policy which governs this?
 
Good one.
I suspect they will say there is a blanket policy, but since it's a guideline only, the PCTs decide if they will or will not follow it.
I shall ask though

I'm not quite sure if this fits in anywhere in your agenda, but my concern is for a wide choice of insulin to remains for patients, especially animal insulins. While there are many insulins available, patients are not being given a choice in their medication at diagnosis, or when experiencing problems.
I have many people PM me having serious problems on synthetic analogue long-acting insulins whose concerns are not being listened to by their doctors. Often their doctors are reluctant to change their insulin, and patients are only offered Levemir as analternative to Lantus, and vice-versa. Patients should be made aware of alternatives to analogue insulins; both synthetic and animal, as they could possibly have improved health and diabetes management on an altenative insulin type. A significant number of people have experience health problems and poor BS control on synthetic 'human' and analogue insulins, therefore it is important that the choice of insulin remains for everyone.
.... and NO restrictions on glucose testing strips for type-1s or 2s!

Re the diabetes event & under the heading

"Self care Support- What help do you receive and what would help you manage better?"

1) Individuals with diabetes need access to a choice of insulin including Porcine & Bovine - far too many diabetics get placed onto a certain "type" of insulin approach which results in suboptimal control & reduction in quality of life.
If the NHS is committed to the Expert Patient Programme then diabetics need to be informed about the 3 choices of insulin available, animal, human & analogue - admittedly there will be people who are unable to make a decision due to other factors but there has to remain a choice of insulin available.

2) No restriction on the availablity of BG Testing Strips - Expert Patient Programme again!

I'd definitely like to see testing restrictions as a hot topic! Don't let them wriggle out of it Hana!
