This may seem like a strange question but I'm relatively new to all of this and I am trying to get to grips with how to best get this disease under control. So if I'm bumbling along with BG levels of between 5.5 to 7.5 (which is ok I'm led to believe) then what is the problem with the odd spike up to 9 or 10 due to an over indulgence of cake or fried rice at the weekend if I am then able to bring it under control again until the next blow out?

Hello and welcome.
Your levels sound good.but beware of 9s or 10s to often.
I think we all over indulge at times,I try not to but cant always manage it when I go out,its easy to say it dosent matter for once, and I have found friends and family saying that to me,but that once could happen all the time.
I would say take care,it is a progressive disease.
The usual recommendation is to aim for a rise of no more than 2 points from your pre meal level, so that could be a guide for you.
I sometimes wonder when people ask if it's OK to have a binge, that they really feel it's not, but want someone else to give them permission. But I think you have to determine what you consider acceptable and manageable - it's your body, your diabetes, and thus your responsibility. You may well have to deal with controlling your diabetes long term, so need to make decisions about how you'll be able to cope diet wise with this. It may be for you that occasional splurges will keep you from falling off the diabetic dietary wagon, but for others they could well be their downfall.
I normally have pretty good control but I do occasionally eat something sugary that I know I shouldn't - usually at night if my levels go a bit low, but I don't actually consider this or the resultant spikes acceptable, and certainly wouldn't do this from preference on a regular basis.
