Artificial pancreas question

Think they have run trials on people only recently under close observation for a short period of time. Last i seen on them was about 20 years away from being available to the masses. Think that knock on a door could of been a scam though !!

That sounds suspicious to me! I was definitely not under the impressions it's going to be ready any time soon.

It's moving into the later stages of clinical trials. Some participants have been sent home with it for overnight use. There's a member if this forum, iHS, who is participating in a trial with the AP, although she isn't part of the overnight group.

I work in the bio sector, in oncology (cancer) clinical trials, doing statistics and software engineering. Believe me when I say the technology and expertise for the kind of system already exists. It's only a matter of time, less than a decade I'd say, when we'll all have them.

Btw it almost certainly wasn't a scam. I know the team behind the AP are looking for funding at the mo as I follow them on Twitter! Good on her for being proactive, I know Diabetes UK are providing funding. Maybe we should all be out knocking on doors!

Interestingly it's not an implant ; its a connected external pump and cgm.

There are implanted pumps and where I live in France there are a few hundred people with them but they aren't connected to a continuous monitoring device . Some people think they are brilliant and the article below describes some people from the US travelling to France from the US to enable them to keep their pumps which are made in the US but not licenced there. However, personally I know of one woman who hated it and had problems with scar tissue.

No I initially thought that but have reread your post and if the direct debit was to Diabetes UK then perhaps it was valid since they have been publicising it recently. I had forgotten that charities in the UK sometimes employ people to canvass door to door.

There have been recent trials overnight at Addenbrookes in Cambridge, which is very exciting as that's where I'm treated.

I don't think it will be going anywhere soon though as the lag between measurement and measurand (i.e. actual BG levels) makes the control aspect of the injection too difficult in anything but steady state at the moment. Its fascinating to me both as a patient and also as a chemical engineer who used to work out process control systems, but nothing this complex.
