Artificial Sweeteners

I get tremendous headaches when people accuse others of being sanctimonious and holier than thou, simply because they make different choices and dare to voice their views in open discussion. It’s probably the shockwaves from all that irony.

Guilty as charged then.

If we make cakes, puddings or biscuits they will be sweetened with something, so..................

What do people use to sweeten their home baked reduced carb products ?

It’s one of my favourite avatars.

I use erythritol. Not that I bake very often.
I don't use xylitol, because it would kill the dogs if they ate a dropped piece of whatever-I-had-cooked.
I don't use aspartame because it gives me headaches, insomnia and a terrible thirst
I don't use stevia, saccharine or several others because they taste unpleasant to me, or keep me awake, or send me hyper.
Sucralose hasn't caused a reaction yet. Which is good. But I rarely buy sweet processed foods, so rarely take it.

Whenever we have one of thse threads (and we get them often, because everyone seems to want to defend their corner and justify their own attitude), I point out that different things suit different people, and if people want to expose themselves to chemical additives, or choose not to, then it is entirely their choice, and there is no point bickering about it.

Yes. LOL but presumably you used a sweetener? Or did you use sugar?
I did use a non artificial sweetener. Is that “guilty as charged” or being “holier than thou”?

I’m really not sure of the point you are trying to make. You state you use small amount of artificial sweetener both for your own pleasure and to make family recipes. I make (sugar reduced) things for the non diabetics that I don’t eat or they eat the version I can. Simple even without living alone.

You keep asking who else uses artificial sweetener and then shoot them down as sanctimonious if they say no. Some have a reaction, blood sugar wise or other (migraine etc) that informs that choice. Some have concerns re safety or cravings. It doesn’t seem very nice to criticise and name call for making different choices to you. We all get to do our own thing. I see threads like this as a way of sharing information not shaming.

Not all sweetners are either artificial or sugar btw.

Tongue in cheek. And I didn’t mean you. You should know that.

I was hoping to draw a line under my view quite a few threads back and that is that I do use some, guilty as charged in my own case. But don’t need the extreme view rammed down my throat which happens on here all too often.

Ref Brunneiras post. On wilfully introducing chemicals into our bodies. We all do it unless we live on top of a Swiss mountain.

Listlad, I don't understand this at all.

You asked a question about whether people use artificial sweeteners. Some do, some don't, some feel strongly about the subject, some don't. I don't see anyone forcing their opinion on anyone else, its just a thread with a variety of opinions, which makes for a better discussion, in my view.

OK, I am sorry guys, but this thread is no longer about artificial sweeteners, is has become confrontational for the sake of it.
I am now closing the thead.

Reminding everyone of the following forum rules:

A3. Respect others’ differences. Do not disparage because they do not share your opinion or way of doing things.
and
A6. This is a Forum of many different personalities – if you disagree with someone then start a constructive debate or use the Private Message (PM) system to have a conversation. It is unhelpful to have to read miles of disagreeing posts, and can deflect from the purpose of the thread (i.e. thread derailing).

Please be aware that if these disagreements spill over onto other threads, and derail them as well, then thread bans will be issued to the antagonists.

I am very sorry @Indy51 that your thread was knocked off course by a few people unable to focus on the research and the discussion around that.
