Type 2 At a Loss

I eat carbs for my diabetes
all diabetics I need some carbs to balance the

So fat and fibre are difficult to digest. Protein is ok but you don’t want to go mad? I can see the problems you have as carbs are the only other thing left. I guess in your shoes all I could think of doing is maximise the vegetables, protein and fat I can safely tolerate and then use the slowest digesting carbs I can find to top up. Does little and often work better than bigger meals for digestion?

I’m very confused by the comments about all diabetics needing carbs. It is the very thing we (type 2 especially) don’t need as it causes all our problems. Though if as you say you you are on insulin it’s a much finer balancing act than I have to consider. Many in this forum on similar meds do restrict their carbs and as a result take less insulin though.

Hi HSSS
sorry to confuse you - of course diabetics on diet only, tablet medication, or even pre diabetics, are best to take as little carbs as they can safely get away with. Unfortunately, by the time I was properly diagnosed - long story - took medics around 15yrs to tell me I was diabetic - by which time a lot of damage was done & I had to go insulin. Amount taken as explained in last email - However, if I exercise too long I can go into a hypno and to counteract this I must always make sure I have enough carbs in my system. Besides as you point out there really isn't a lot else I can take. I honestly manage reasonably well but just wondered if anyone out there had any recipe ideas I could try out. anything with fibre can cause me incredible pain - landed overnight in A & E after eating ONE stick of celery - obstruct so easily - used to love all things salady but hey ho. I am still very much better than some of the lovely people who have taken time to email me that's for sure.
Have a nice day
regards

Have you tried celeriac it mashes well and is quite low carb
Carol

@Cassiebabe have you considered using a juicer to separate the fibre content out you would be left with a smoothie containing nutrients but hardly any fibre what so ever.

Not ideal I know but maybe better than nothing.

Hi Carol
mashed celeriac is a brilliant suggestion for my diabetes and I do include it in my diet as it has tremendous health benefits vitamin wise but only take it in small amounts and only if I am not going anywhere special within the next 24hours because of its high fibre content.

Hi JohnEGreen
you are right when you say celeriac is high in fibre - though I do like a wee drop mixed in with mashed potatoes. my comfort food when I am not going out anywhere special.
Loved your quote thanks for that

Hi Carol
your suggestion is greatly appreciated and yes I do take it in small quantities only because of its high fibre content. I especially like it mashed in with boiled potatoes and a wee bit butter - great comfort food

Hi JohnEGreen
I never even thought about doing that - and neither did either of my dieticians - don't have a juicer but it really is worth trying -
many thanks for that

@Cassiebabe - If you want to tag someone, just type the @ symbol immediately before their name - just like I did with your name.

Sorry for delay in responding - was hit by a bug and spent the last couple of days recovering - fine now = but thanks for the info re juicers in Lidl - I will be in the shop on Saturday and will have a look to see if there are any left
