Recently i had to take some time out from work because i was feeling quite unwell due to my blood sugar evels being too high,had a sick note from the doctor who i have to say is very supportive in my battle against diabetes, she said it was ok when i told her was doing lchf to control my diabetes. At the moment a slice of toast can send my bs levels through the roof , so ive basically had to cut out carbs altogether .It was my birthday last week and i had a message from the deputy care manager from the home where i work saying happy birthday dont eat too much cake............... well........ as if........... i wish. I was mad as hell because ive been trying so hard to bring down my sugar levels .My daughter said dont take it personally, but its difficult. I hasten to add that this deputy manager said to me dont worry about high sugar levels theres nothing to worry about,you only need to worry about having hypos............ this comes from the mouth of a registered nurse i ask you.......... what about the long term complications , retinapathy,neuropathy, and other complications. I work in a nursing home with nurses who dont have the first idea about diabetes. Am i over reacting ?
 
I agree with your daughter not to take it personally, but can understand how it upset you.

I am concerned at the level of ignorance though , in an environment where there is likely to be people who are diabetic and reliant on others for their care and management . High BG levels can make you feel awful as well as have immediate implications such as increased thirst, thrush etc.

Perhaps it would be helpful to take in information regarding diabetes and offer it with the explanation that it gives some insight in to why you were off work with raised BG levels ( possibly not the ones with NHS dietary advice though ! ) I understand that this might be difficult due to an apparent " treading on toes " though . As you have an understanding GP maybe she could offer advice to them if you continue to feel misunderstood ?

It's not uncommon for HCP's to have only a superficial knowledge about diabetes , though it is touched on in training there is an awful lot else to learn besides so unless there is some specialisation involved misunderstandings can and do happen. Just read through some of things on this forum that HCP's have said, and sadly some of it is from those that DO supposedly have specialised training

I took it as a throw away line..
but I can understand your frustration of the pig ignorance when it comes to diabetic care in a nursing home, killing them with high BG over time is ok, having a bad hypo that needs a hospital transport will get them into trouble

edit, in some places I think it's worse than that, I think it's if they hypo they have to treat it and that takes time, it's easier to keep them high
 
oh jack they get their knickers in a right twist if a service user needs hospital attention , if they were more observent then their service users wouldnt need hospital attention .

they are no different here, it's the easy path and minimal care.
 
 
Had a brilliant birthday thankyou heathenlass, , im not going to bother treading on toes when i go back to work, they wouldnt understand anyway ! ,i have a supportive family and, management at work can kiss my ass
 
You would expect better from a Deputy Manager and a Registered Nurse at that, but your daughters right that you shouldn't let these things get to you, some people don't engage their brains before opening their mouths. However I do pity those patients under her care if this is her attitude towards diabetes and high bg levels.
 
Sounds like an attempt at a light hearted comment to me,

"don't eat too much cake" isn't so inappropriate - at least they didn't say "don't eat any cake". Many people with diabetes do strive daily with foods to avoid raising blood glucose and / or increase weight, but allow themselves a day off on their birthday and perhaps Christmas and a couple of other special days.
