As I'm symptomless and only just over the HbA1c levels of 48 mmol/mol, I've started to tackle it by cutting right back on carbs (particularly sugar), fat and salt. I need to lose about a third of my body weight anyway. I'm going to reduce my calories intake until I can stand going for days at a time on net negative calories, to bring the weight down. I don't intend to include much exercise until I've reached a weight that no longer tends to incapacitate me. If I start an exercise programme now, I'll soon drop out of sheer boredom. Even if I managed to stick with it, it would just start turning my bulk into muscle that would revert to fat as soon as I stopped. I topped the scales at 18st 2 lbs a week ago and was down to 17st 12lbs today. The lowest weight I've been as an adult was 10st 10 lbs, but that was after dieting in my early 30s. I'm twice that age now. Having discussed it with my GP, I'm not averse to bouts of crash dieting if I can stand the discomfort of the hunger pains!
