As you have so recently been diagnosed, I would recommend taking advice from your diabetes team on your insulin doses. There is little point in taking a basal test at this stage as you are probably in the honeymoon stage so your basal needs will be fluctuating.
Your BG is likely to be high but, typically, the recommended insulin doses at first are very conservative. This is partially to avoid a hypo and also to give your body a chance to slowly adjust.
Unfortunately, diabetes is not something that is sorted in a couple of days: you need to be patient. But remember when it is sorted, there are many people with diabetes who carry on with a "normal" life. And in some cases (e.g. athletes, actors, politicians, ...) a very un-normal life.
