Hello everyone,

My name is Carmen 30 weeks pregnant and 29 y.o. It all started with me feeling really sick, losing weight, throwing up 3-5 times per day, very thirsty, wee very often and used to get very tired and breathless. They've blame it on the pregnancy until last week they wanted me to make the glucose test and they've found out I have very big numbers. At the moment they are a bit confused if its a gestational one or a type 1, although they believe it might be type 1. I was in the hospital for few days, because my ketones were really high as well and they started the treatment immediately with insulin, potassium , calcium, etc. , eventually I started to feel much better and they've discharged me.
I am doing insulin 4 times per day at home, checking my levels 7 times ( before and after meals ) and try to reach the numbers between 4 and 5.3

Being pregnant and in this stage they want me to give birth earlier, which started to worry me a little bit, obviously I don't want my baby to be affected during the pregnancy or after. It all happened so fast, being alone doesn't help me at all, which is why I decided to join this community and find some friends, people who can understand a similar situation.

Thank you and I wish all the best for everyone

Carmen

Hi Karmen,
Congratulations on your pregnancy.
I was diagnosed with type 1 during my first pregnancy at 28 weeks. My consultant was certain that it was type 1 from when he first saw me and a GAD antibody test confirmed it.
It's a lot to take in - blood tests, glucose levels, insulin doses. It's hard work to keep track and keep it under control during pregnancy as it is a moving target. I was lucky to have a really supportive diabetes team. I had a healthy son and have had another since.
My insulin doses increased by quite a lot towards the end of the pregnancies. I was monitored carefully and received regular scans to check the size of the baby and the condition of the placenta. Towards the end of the first one I had some very sudden hypos (I have never had any like it since) and was checked at the day assessment unit each time.
Both boys were induced at around 38 weeks and born by normal delivery. Although the births were quite medicalised they went well.
After both births my insulin requirements went down to really small amounts. As I breastfed they were reduced to less than my usual levels.

I think getting to grips with having diabetes whilst pregnant has helped to give me good control now.

Please ask if you have any questions.

Good luck with your pregnancy.

Thank you very much for your response and your support. Indeed it is a lot to take in, concerns and so on, I am trying to do my best to be strong.

I wanted to ask you something else as well, when I was in the hospital ( for 3 days between ACUA and maternity unit ), my legs started to swollen, especially the right one, I've never had this problem in my pregnancy before and they blame it on the pregnancy again. Can it be like a side effect of the insulin ?
Today I had a scan for my leg because they thought I might have blood clots, which appeases I dont, but they wanna repeat in one week just to be sure and until then to take medication to thin my blood.

Thank you very much

CARMEN

Hi Carmen
I haven't heard of swollen legs being a side effect of insulin.
