Hi
I thought I was getting an idea of how to manage my new low carb diet but my bg readings this evening have confused me. 6.1 before eating, had quorn mince with lots of vegetables (non root) and a v small portion of red lentil pasta (low carb/high protein ) 2hours after meal 11.3
Yes, the lentil pasta will be the culprit, in addition to the lesser amount of carbs in the veggies. There are also about 5% carbs in quorn mince to add to the total.
You don't need net carbs if you are in the UK.You need the total carbs. In some other countries the fibre content is added to the carb amounts you see on packets but in the UK it is already deducted.
Just look at the packets/tins/bottles for the nutrients and look at the Total Carbohydrate amount. You can ignore the "of which sugars" If you are eating fresh unpackaged food supermarket websites are very good at detailing the nutrients of their products. (Tesco is the one I use) or the growers websites. There is also an excellent book (and app) called Carbs and Cals available from Amazon. This lists thousands of ordinary foods with photos of the food served on a plate, showing the weight, number of carbs, calories, fat, fibre and protein. I couldn't have managed without it, and I still use it now after well over 2 years.
