Big reduction in insulin today - why I wonder??

Hia - I just wandered if anyone had any idea why, out for the blue today, I am needing far less insulin.
Nothing changed, same amount of carbs, work as normal and nothing unusual happening. Also, when I was at 4.0 tonight I took some glucose and it took about 45 minutes and a lot more glucose than normal to get up to a BS of 5.0.
I did change my cannula and set today (i have an insulin pump) but so far in 9 months this has not made any huge difference to my blood sugars on change days.

Any ideas anyone?
 

Anything going on with your hormones?

Could it be the heat?
 
Nothing that I know of with hormones. I thought heat but today/tonight has been cooler here than the last few nights so I'm not sure. Might be just 'one of those diabetic days' :crazy:

I know the heat can decrease my insulin usage so I would go along with the heat theory
 
Hi...
The closer humid muggy weather gets me - it drags my levels down.
Find myself reducing my insulin to prevent the hypo's.
When the weather goes cooler and fresher I go striaght back up again...
So consider the weather changes a possible factor maybe ?

Will watch for this then thanks. My pump is currently on 80% and I've just had to slug another glucojuice !!! Oh joys roblem:
My husband is away with work so doubly worrying - think I'll be on blood sugar watch for a lot of tonight and a zombie in work tomorrow!

Call it the wonders of using a pump :lol: Even with basal rate testing and getting all your levels ok, there are times when the body's need for insulin just changes... sometimes there's a reason but sometime's there doesn't seem to be one at all... The only thing you can do is go with the flow and wait and see if there's a pattern forming and then adjust your settings on that........... but sometimes when you adjust, you then find a few days later that you need to revert back to the settings you had before. Often it's very baffling but you do learn to get used to it.........
 
I'm glad you said that iHs as I'm so tempted to change my basal patterns if things start changing. As you say, more often than not if I do this, I find I have to change them back when things settle down again. I write down all my basal rates and changes i make and I have one page in my A5 notebook tha says 'these rates work' which are the basal rates that seem to work when things are going ok. I have learnt to use the temp basal for when I have my period so I need to try and avoid tweaking my basal patterns tomorrow again.
I guess if the sugars are still on the low side after a period of a week or more it would mean that my basal rates needed to be changed?
It's the randomness of diabetes that frustrates me so :crazy:
 
See if the same thing happens tomorrow and the next day and be careful about using TBRs as they can then start to affect all the rest of your bg levels later in the day. With a pump youve always got to try and think ahead all the time...... be great if we all have a crystal ball wouldn't it :lol:
 
TBRs - yes I find that they can have a dramatic affect later on. It really is a case of slowly bit by bit - more often than not I seem to get it a bit wrong though. I still live my pump though and consider myself lucky that I've got it. I was just thinking earlier that when I kept going low I could actually suspend my inuslin for a bit - once the long term injection had been done it was far harder to control low loos sugars.
 
Low *loos* sugars!!! Low blood sugars even - should test mine now I think :roll:
 
Just an update - it all got back to normal yesterday and woke up today at 4.8 as usual. Just a blip that I'll put down to the weather. Thanks again for your advice.
 
I have had this too for no apparent reason. I went from needing 24 units of Lantus to 10 units as I was having hypos of 1.2mmol/l. No idea why this happened. There appears to be no reason. My endo said that that is just the nature of diabetes. It is always changing.
 
It's a real 'challenge' isn't it - well that's one word for it!!
 
It "is" an unpredictable condition full of suprises

Heat and stress. This is what causes my blood sugar to lower and has done so for the past few days when I didn't need insulin at all, apart from my daily Lantus per night.
