Birthday Weekend

Hi All,

As some of you will already have read in the newly diagnosed section, I was diagnosed 4 weeks ago with type 1, and I am on the standard pre/post meal insulin and my evening lantus.

Now it is my Birthday tomorrow bringing me to a grand old age of 28, but I have concerns.

I am going out tonight with a friend for an Indian then we will be going to a few clubs. The DSN told me that if I am drinking alcohol then make sure I eat prior and post (a kebab on the way home or something). Now my question's for this are:

I have also got a tea-party tomorrow for the benefit of the Kid's, and then my missus is taking me out for another meal tomorrow.

1) Do I still take my insulin with the Indian considering I am going to be consuming some alcohol. I vaguely remember the DSN mentioning this and I think the answer was yes but I can't totally remember.
2) Injecting: Is there any legalities to injecting in a restaurant, It doesn't bother me injecting around other people just wanted to make sure it is okay.

Many Thanks.

Steven

Hi Steven and happy birthday for tomorrow!

It's not to late to ring your DSN and ask them to explain what you should do regarding your insulin tonight, I find with insulin if you are not sure it is better to 'err on the side of caution' and give a reduced dose rather than risk the chance of a hypo later, again best to check with your diabetes nurse being newly diagnosed.

As for injecting in a restaurant I wouldn't worry about who is watching or if they object, you need insulin to stay alive and that is the end of it, whatever you do don't use the toilets as they are dirty filthy places to inject insulin.

Best wishes!

Thank you noblehead, I just spoke to my DSN and she said pretty much what you advised to give a dose of insulin but to make sure that I don't overestimate the amount, and also make sure I have a snack before I go to sleep. I will just inject at the table I have no problems in doing it around people just don't want anyone to make a scene if they are unsure of what I am doing.

Many Thanks
Steven

Enjoy your evening Steven!

Hi Steven
Hope you had a good Birthday...How did you find your sugars?
I was always told to carb up if having a drink by my DSN, the Liver is busy processing the alcohol and if you go low while you sleep, you may not wake due to the alcohol consumption and because your Liver is busy doing the most urgent thing it see's to do, ie removing the toxin (alcohol) you may not get that back up liver dump of Glucose which would save your life....So always adhere on the side of caution during the night with alcohol.
We are all different but I find if I have overdone it a bit then for the whole of the next day I have to reduce my Bolus...but you may be OK.

Anyway hope you had a great time and are not too hung over

I ended up being quite apprehensive so didn't really have too much to drink in the end, I just found myself worrying about what if's, but I'm sure in time I will get to grips with things. My blood sugars have been pretty good over the weekend though ranging from 5-9 with one high of 10 and a low of 3.2, but generally they are within that range which is pretty good I think.

Thanks for all your advice.

Steven

Impressive readings all things considered Steven! You were probably wise to take it easy with the drink given you were only diagnosed 4 weeks ago.

Best wishes!
