I was diagnosed t2 in 2008. I’ve managed to shift 4 stone in weight since mid jan. my sugar levels are normal on zero carb and zero sugar. Right now it’s a struggle. As t2s we now excercise is key. I’ve been pushing past the pain and walking. I have mobility issues due to an undiabetic related condition. I saw a neurologist in March and received a letter with her observations. Muscle wastage in my thigh. I had noticed over the last few years my walking was becoming more and more unbalanced and difficult. This week I haven’t walked at all as it’s impossible. Just want to know how others cope if there is anyone in the forum with a similar issue. Well plus feeling a bit sorry for myself lol

I am a wheelchair user. I have improved my HbA1c and lost weight without a moments excercise. It has been a slower rate of progress than other members but I am happy to have lowered my risk of complications.

My pain levels have shown a small but not insignificant improvement, too.

I think it’s troubling me to become a wheelchair user. I know I need a scooter before I’ll be wheelchair bound. So you did it just with diet? Maybe I best just keep fighting and regulate the diabetes whilst I can. It’s just too easy to throw the towel in as every few months they find something else that’s wrong and it becomes so soul destroying. Thank you for replying xx

Hi there Ziggyzog - I'm sorry to hear you're having such a tough time at the moment. Life can throw us some horrible curved balls sometimes. I can't offer you any wisdom on your mobility challenges except to say that whilst exercise is desirable, the vast, vast majority of anything we can do to control our T2 is what we eat and drink. I always view exercise as almost a finesse objective. Let's face it; we have to work with what we've got at our disposal at any given time.

Just as an aside, I've edited your thread title to change a word. It's not a word we can have in use on the forum, so I did my best to sstill show your frustration.

I do hope you're feeling a bit brighter soon.

I have mobility problems due to a spinal injury 25 years ago, and several abdominal surgical operations. Surgery 4 years ago made a slight improvement, but before that I began exercising in water. Swimming and aquafit. I have regained some mobility by weight loss, and attending a gym session for people with challenging health conditions. Most exercises are seated, and advice is provided in how to increase strength from using the adapted machines. All at the local council gym. Would something like that be available where you live, @Ziggyzog ? Also, perhaps you need a referrall to physiotherapy.

Edit to correct spelling.
I am ignoring the grammatical errors.

Thank you for replying. It was in physio that I discovered my legs were worse then I thought. I had to attend due to falling and doing my back in several years ago. I couldn’t do the minimal excercise like just flexing my foot. I’d end up with severe pain and burning. That was seated. That particular year I had lost 5 stone in weight. I’m now just a stone and a bit away from being at a medically approved weight for my height etc. It took another 3 years and a dentists insistence that I ask the doctor to be referred to a neurologist. She subsequently confirmed the balance issue and the muscle wastage. I’m now having a lot of tests as she doesn’t know why my muscles are wasting in the legs. It’s funny every time I saw my doctors they blamed the diabetes for my inability to walk. I really wish that people and doctors stop thinking that all health issues are diabetic related as that degree of complacency is silly and dangerous. I’m sure I’ll be fine and back to my positive self tomorrow.

I was a wchair user before diagnosis and it was not because of T2 Diabetes. Diet is key.

Sadly we don’t have one around here. The other thing I have is hypokaleamia. So any slight strain can trigger an attack. So when I built myself up to an hours of gentle walking I spend the day recovering. Then it changed a few weeks back my right leg is like a dead weight. Some days are better then others. I’m not ready to quit just it’s so difficult as you would understand I’ll use you guys as inspiration to walk tomorrow

Yes it is you’re so right. Mine was due to severe depression and agoraphobia brought on by the hypokaleamia attacks. So I wouldn’t leave the house. My fathers diabetic I think I’ll just blame him he he

Lol I'm blaming the makers of Walkers Crisps!

oh gosh yes they booted golden wonder out of town didn’t they. Funnily enough I was in Germany not so long ago. Apparently it’s a leader in diabetic friendly restaurants and the whole low carb food system. So tomorrow I’ll be doing my research. I’ll be going back in October so hopefully will see what these eateries are like and what the low carb foods are like. There were none I found in Cologne. So it’ll be dusseldorf and beyond. I’ll post what I discover here

Aye, we Brits are lagging behind a bit.

Sadly so. However we can change that bit by bit. Thank you for your words of wisdom and support.

No problem at all. I'm off to bed but hope to see more of you in the forum over the coming weeks and months.

Yes for sure rest well and sweet dreams and one day we may even have a wheelchair race whoop whoop lol

Have you thought of investing in some ankle weights? They are not very heavy. You could do gentle knee bends, and lift your legs up one at a time. Lay on your bed on your tummy and bend your leg one at a time..Front and back. This will strengthen your thigh muscles.

Thank you for your suggestion. I will buy them and try. I am so very full of optimism and am happy to report I’m back to my mischievous self. What’s life unless it challenges, and there’s always satisfaction when we can say we won in the end! Heh heh

Glad to hear you're feeling more positive. I think that the reason we can feel better about stuff is the fact that when we know know that the changes and choices we make can directly affect us in a day to day fashion this makes us feel empowered. We havn't just handed over our decision making to a health care professional, taken the pills and potions with nary a thought to ask questions and been left (sometimes) with nagging doubts.

On the excercise front, I bought a couple of resistive bands. They were very cheap on Amazon. They caused too much pain for me and now take up space in the garage but they may be just the thing for you, worth a try for the pennies they cost.

Your posts are my thoughts about myself but I've lost 3.5st not 5.
However my immobility started before weight loss... I think.
I was walking through a school pathway and found I was leaning to one side and very unsteady on my feet. I then developed weakness and then back pain. I've always walked everywhere. I've train travelled all over the UK and parts of Europe. I've always loved walking whenever I've wanted to.

I now cannot walk without huge pain and often end up crying due to it. Today was a prime example. My partner walks very very fast with his long legs and with 5yr old being off sick but no longer contagious I'm expected to keep up. We were carrying a tiny bit shopping and I'm in total agony. My leg goes numb on my right from scatica but not always numb so don't feel it's neuropathy. Definitely scatica as often not numb but back locks up with my pelvis and I cannot move without twisting my whole body to accommodate these problems.

I too don't believe diabetes is my back/leg/bum pain cause.
I don't believe my iron deficiency anaemia is fixed well enough yet and wonder if lack of oxygen is making my pain worse. My so called asthma has nearly vanished. Which tells me more anaemia related than asthma. However pain takes my breath away.
I'm back to see the physio consultant at the end of the month.
He's asked me to think of 3 things I want him to help me with.
I just want to walk without pain, painkillers none existant.... Like everyone else around me.
I don't think diabetes can be the cause of this.
Does anyone thou?

Well my gps surgery directed me to Bupas website on Diabetes. Shockingly outdated focused on meds meds meds. I love amazon. I just ordered some. I also go some light ankle weights that were also suggested. I found a good low carb site called Dr Almond. Have a look all looks interesting.
