5.1 How can I reduce it? Have a Benecol drink every day. Could go on but won't . Suggestions please?

Almonds are supposed to be good for cholesterol and soya milk or tofu if you like the taste.

Hi broads,
I refuse to take statins and lower mine with what I eat and drink. At diagnosis mine was 7.5.
Soya milk (I use Alpro lite)
Almonds
Walnuts
Salmon
Avocados
Garlic
Raw Onions
I also use benecol drinks and benecol spread.
Last cholesterol reading in February was 3.2.
Hope this helps, Catherine.

My cholesterol level last week was 5.1. Haven't had a previous test for years so nothing to work on at the mo. I am full of nuts, macadamia, almonds, almonds, Brasils and walnuts. I always use olive oil to cook with unless the flavour is too strong when I will use Sunflower. I have one Benecol drink every day, not cheap when it's one a day. I have salmon 3 times a fortnight. Love avacados. Don't know where to go next to reduce cholesterol levels.
All I do know is that i have worked SOOO hard since being diagnosed diabetic, I do not want to take any drugs whatsoever, I really have done my upmost to loose weight, keep sugar levels down.
Any other ways of reducing cholesterol?

The 5.1 result is hard to comment on because it means very little without a measurement of the constituent parts - LDL, HDL, VLDL, triglycerides.
Depending on those numbers, 5.1 could be good, bad or indifferent. Do you have those figures?

All the best,

fergus

Hi broads,
Two other foods I forgot to mention are beans and oats. Obviously as you are a low carber this may pose a problem. A few beans sprinkled over salads, added to soups etc may not make much difference. You could also sprinkle a few oatflakes into soups, over yoghurts etc. Might be worth a try?
Catherine.

That's not bad broads. Anything below 1.7 is considered pretty normal and the lower the better. The fewer refined carbs you eat, the lower it's likely to go.
Your doctor may have your HDL figure and this time, the higher the better.

All the best,

fergus

Fergus, refresh me please. Shattered and completely brain dead at the mo. Refined/ unrefined carbs. Explain please. I have a feeling that I might kick myself in the morning for asking this question.
