Hi
Just about 30 mins ago I was talking to my other half when he said: what have you done to your eye? You popped a blood vessel. I looked in the mirror and I have a red patch on the side of my right eye ball. I have no pain and can't see any floaters and vision is not altered. Obviously now that I know about it I can "feel" it. Should I panic? Is it something that will go away?

Have you done anything to the outside of your eye recently, such as scratch it?
Did you notice this blood vessel enlarging over the past few days / weeks?
Do you have retinopathy of any degree in that eye?
Have your BG levels and diet been stable or have you had ups and downs in recent months?

As it's not affecting the inside of your eye and your vision, it may not be seen as an eye emergency, but I would seriously consider contacting NHS Direct (or whatever it is they're now called) and perhaps getting an appointment to see an eye specialist.

It could be nothing, but it's almost always best to seek a specialist's opinion.

I do not recall doing anything. I did not notice it this morning and I would not have tonight had my bf not pointed it out.

As for my sugar it has been high. We are going to see how it is in the morning and then might go to eye clinic at the hospital.

Nothing to worry about, its not connected to diabetes, funnily enough I had it a couple of weeks ago, took about 8/10 days to go. It looks quite scary. Had a chat with the doc and he explained what it was. I think it just worries you when you have something wrong with you.

With a hemorrhage of the eye (diabetic retinopathy related) you would see the bleed in your vision which would disperse over time, there's some advice here about red eyes from the NHS:

If it all concerned and it doesn't clear get your eyes looked at!

I am pleased to say that this morning it has pretty much clear

Good to hear

I had a similar thing years ago pre diabetes, big red bloody mark beside of my iris about 15 mm long. Disappeared quickly over a few days. I worried about it then and would worry a lot more with the diabetes if it happened again.

In six years of retinopathy, maculopahy and macular oedema the only time i have seen blood in my eye at all was when i was given drops for raised pressures which made me sneeze coninuously. This of course caused broken blood vessels.

In fact, i have often wished that I had some sign of what was going on behind my eyes. It usually comes as a shockk to be told I have had anoher bleed when I think I am doing fine.

On the oher hand, when I hear people saying they have had visible bleeding for monhs on end, I think -perhaps not.......
