The manufacturers are happy to give away meters (I've got five), and I'm lucky (as a type 2) that I also have strips on repeat prescription; however, each GP surgery seems to make its own rules, and many of them refuse to prescribe test strips for type 2s. That's very short-sighted, but it's what cost-cutting tends to drive in the NHS, just as it does in business.

There seem to be a lot of type2's who are being denied testing kit, even though NICE guidelines state that 'anyone on blood glucose lowering treatment ( ie metformin) should have access to self testing'!

Seems bizzare to me, the cost of treating one diabetic overnight in hospital would pay for a year's supply of test strips easily!!

It's terrible treating diabetics like that no matter what type they r they should get what they need I've got a plastic bag full of unused needles and test strips just sitting in a cupboard doing nothing when they could b helping someone that needs them

I was newly diagnosed type 2 at the end of December and because of the length of time they think I've had diabetes and the high bg levels, they prescribed metformin immediately. I was told I didn't need to self test! NHS Cost cutting and not necessary! I bought my own machine, strips and lancets. Just had review today and bg has hardly moved. Now being prescribed flick azide also. Now I can get strips etc on prescription. Pity I've bought 300 of each already! Which is the best meter? I bought the freestyle freedom lite.

I have submitted an e petition regarding the fact that some doctors are refusing to give meters, strips and lancets, because N.I.C.E. guidelines state that diabetics that are taking medication should self test! Hopefully the e petition gets accepted, and i will post links to it on DCUK:smile:
