Hello everyone! I would like to know if I can obtain a testing kit etc from my DN on prescription as I am on a pension and cannot afford to buy privately I am also on dialysis for 12hrs a week and my dialysis nurse tests my blood sugar then and says it seems high so insists that I have better treatment from the DN
Its a lottery like many things in the NHS. Most practices are very loath to prescribe these to type2's because of cost although many will just say you don't need one.
Suggest you try to emphasise the need to monitor your BS as part of your desire to take control of your condition. Concentrate on your diet and need to closely monitor the effects of different foods which you cant do without a monitor. You only need to do this for a short while so emphasise it is not an ongoing cost.
You can get the monitor free from many manufacturers but the cost of test strips is very expensive so dont go to chemists but look around on ebay or even Amazon.
I went to see DN today and was pleasantly surprised to receive an AgaMatrix Wavesense Jazz blood glucose monitoring system with an ample supply of test strips and Lancets and a sharps box.
So I have had excellent service from my local health centre and my DN
