Hi I'm a few problems since my eye operation. On the morning of the Op my BS was 5.6 after that all over the place with quite a few high's. I know surgical procedures can affect the BS readings but it still wont behave it's self. Yesterday I had a high day I corrected twice and eventually BS, before bed was 4.9 I awoke this morning on 13.2 I was not happy and I corrected and then had a hypo of 2.6.

I'm also having a big problem with hypo unawareness. This is awful........... On Saturday morning my daughter came into the kitchen and said why are you sweeping the floor, I said I didn't know, she said you must test I said I did and she said what is it I said it's bad and your not going to like it. It was 1.9. She said mum stop sweeping the floor and I said I know and then burst into tears.

I have to take 11 eye drops per day, one of them is called Timolol and on the leaflet it says :-

Take special care with Timolol eye drops if; you suffer from diabetes as whilst using Timolol eye drops the symptoms of low blood sugar levels ( hypoglycaemia maybe masked), that's a bit of an understatement. If my daughter hadn't come down stairs, well best not to think about it. I always have hypo symptoms in the 3 's and I always check on my meter, so 1.9 is way out of character.
!tt
The tablets I now have to take as well, Diamox SR Capsules have this in the leaflet

Take care special care and speak to your doctor before taking Diamox : you have diabetes or problems with your blood sugar level  I have just found something else possible side affects; reduction in the number of white blood cells and 'platelets' I had a platelet transfusion when I had my daughter. Do the doctors know that I have diabetes? I do wonder now as the date on the eye medications is dated the 27th August, one day before I had the operation. I have just not eaten dinner yet and it's 11.9 OMG, everything is going mad and I'm starting to get anxious.

I'm doing as I have been told, taking it a bit easier, no lifting no food shopping ( I got that delivered) went out for a meal yesterday I just cant seem to get back on track

Thanks for reading my woes

Take care

Wish I had an understanding of insulin or even the severe bg swings. So I could give somthing helpfull I must be driving you made not to mention feel awful. I can only send you my best wishes and my hope that it resolvs itself quickly .

Hi RRB

I have also had unpredictable blood sugars after surgery so know what it's like. Best thing you can do is test more often and be careful not to stack insulin (correction doses) however stubborn your BGs might be. I'm sure you knew that anyway.

Hoping it all settles down for you soon

Hi RRB , even as a T2 i suffered very badly wwith hypos when a surgical procedure gave me glaucoma and I had to take drops for it.,
The Drs were amazed that it could cause such severe effects so they really don't know . In my case of course it was not as serious as with you as a T1.

I had to take my drops my last lot of drops just before bed. I would go to bed with readings in the 4's and wake up an hour or so later with reading in the low 2's .
I think you need to let someone know. They often underestimate the effects and not enough people give them feedback. I suspect many just stop taking the drops.

Just to add - I see that Timolol is a beta blocker. I have been on very low dose beta blocker tablets since March and several times have found myself down in the 2s without any symptoms - yet I seem to be functioning normally. Hoping I don't drop into the 1s  Might be worth setting your target BS a little higher for the duration.

Hi, just popping in RRB,
I've been coping with some other issues so haven't had time to speak to anyone on the forum recently.
Totally agree about running things a bit higher for the moment ie taking slightly less rapid but also testing more frequently.
Thinking of you,
Love, P.

Thank you guys for the helpful advice. I hoped things would settle down by the weekend but still having highs and worrying about the hypo unawareness. My daughter goes back to school on Wednesday and she has been helpful and sensible. I'm going to miss her , I can see, but I can't see directly to the right (right eye was operated on) and I want to see my dad on Wednesday as its his birthday. I'm confident in my house but my daughter has noticed I'm not so confident when we are out. It will get better won't it, I am always on the go and finding it very difficult. Also since the Op I'm not as active and busy so that could be another reason the BS are higher. I feel as though I'm not functioning properly, even though I tell people I'm ok and on the mend, but don't feel like that, but finding it difficult to explain :? Are these feelings normal? Is just early days possibly?

Thank you again for all your kindness, help and support

I have found that there's a lot of expectation (almost pressure) from people for me to be all better now (after my op) because I look OK from the outside and I've been all fixed up and discharged from hospital. You have temporarily lost the vision in your eye. Things are still mending on the inside. Please take it easy until you feel ready and don't hesitate to ask for help from others whilst you are not 100%. It will get better but you need time.

You're probably right Robert, if you don't have a bandage, crutches or a cast, then you 'appear to be fit and well' thank you.

Sorry if I missed it RRb but you know i have problems wih my own vision. DId you have all the procedures they expected to perform? are you able to have the check ups in your local hospital rather than having to travel back to southampton/

i was interested that you have SR diamox. Since I started to develop treatment -induced glaucoma I have to have diamox even after laser.

A stern sister with arms foded waches over me while i swallow the tablet with a glass of water. Something to do with their insurance.

problem is -it makes me sicjk for several days afterwards. I have never heard of the S R but this could be an alternative.

how are you toleraing it? It could well be contributing to your flucuaing sugars as well as the drops.

I hope you are starting to feel better now.

Thank you unbeliever. I had the Op about 1.30pm so really quickly after I arrived. They did a Vitrcetomy ,lasering and inserted an 80% gas bubble which will slowly come down after 6 to 8 weeks. It appeared to go well, no problems and I didn't even have any pain killers. Today, I had a follow up appointment in the post and it's on Thursday September 19th at Southampton.

I finished the last tablet tonight and I do suffer from nausea but the Diamox hasn't appeared to make it any worse. Sorry to hear of your awful sickness taking Diamox, maybe the SR would be a much better alternative

Sugar levels today are better ( haven't checked bedtime though) I have been going out for short walks, this afternoon I went to the cemetery and was talking to my mum and said Hi to my daughters dad. I needed to go out on my own, I can't see anything out of the operated eye and my vision, directory to the right (east) has gone, I kept asking my daughter to stay on my left side as that is the better eye, but she goes back to school tomorrow and I need to get my confidence back. Most probably the gas bubble is blocking my vision and will get better as the bubble lowers then disappears.
I must say It's scary out there sometimes

I hope you are doing ok even though I know your eyes are not that good

Take care with best wishes RRB

I understand about the confidence usiness . You really do have to take care when you can't see on one side. I am always amazed that they allow people to drive with only sight of one eye.

I think you are right about the bubble impeding your vision but will gradually go down.
Lets hope its soon.

T hey have practically reached the end of the road with treatment for me now. I have maculopathy again in both eyes and have been told there is nothing more they can do but they keep caling me back - have been there every other week for the past few months so I think they
are reluctant to let me go. G oing back on Tuesday for either one last attempt at finding somewhere to laser -or to be told definitely that is it.

Do take care unil you get vision back. I was nearly knocked down by a police car when I couldn' see out of one eye!

Hi there

Gosh you I have found you really have to be careful out there especially crossing roads, I look to the right at an angel 3 or 4 times and make a dash for it. You were so lucky not to of been hit by the police car

I will be thinking of you on Tuesday and sending lots of good wishes your way. I find HOPE is a wonderful word, one to hold on to with both hands. Take care.

Best wishes RRB

Hi
Is it possible that you are overcompensating for your 'highs' in the morning when actually you may have had a hypo in your sleep and you body has dumped glucose into your system and then with you thinking you are high and taking more insulin is putting you on a cycle of highs and lows. Its called Somogyi Phenomenon and another is Dawn Phenomenon (Liver Dump) and both are covered by articles on Diabetes.co.uk Worth checking out and speaking to your diabetes team. Good luck I hope you feel better soon.

Hello to everybody out their. I am new on here and wondered if anybody could help. Over the last 6 days I have found my levels all over the place. Ranging from 4 to. 19.7. On Friday I felt unwell and went to sleep about 8pm and didn't wake until 10 am the following morning. My sugar level was 16. The only thing that has changed is I had a small op on my hand on Tuesday. I also notice that my temp is up and down at the time of writing 37.8. Anybody any thoughts ?

How did it go on Tuesday (if I've got the correct Tuesday) ? Is everything ok?

RRB

Hello Roger and welcome to the forum. Operations can cause huge changes to the body, the morning I went in for my eye op my BS was 5.6  after that very erratic and some high numbers, it took a while for the BS to get back to into a good range.

Your temperature changes could be due to slight infection, 37.8 is in the normal range, but if it continues to fluctuate it would be better to see your GP or a surgery nurse. Are you managing to eat normally, or any changes in diet? just make sure you drink plenty of fluids and I hope you start to feel better very soon.

Best wishes RRB

thanks for asking. The angiogram showed very little fluid leaking but the scans weren't good, the maculopathy is worse.
It was agreed between several drs that to attempt laser would be useless. Only serouid ijecons ever worked for me i he pas ut I can't have any more because they have stared to cause problems {glaucoma]
There was omethig of a conference with several people askig me quesions . Eventually the consulant decided that =alhough previous injections of avastin had not worked at all that further injections of it , each month for 3 months might work better.
So thy have ot gien up on me enirely -as yet.
I don' hink there are any further options should this fail.
Thaks aain 0 how are you now?
