Cake.
I fell unwell last week. I needed more insulin all week regardless of other factors. I usually average about 20 units of insulin per day but last week required 27 units daily. It took me a little while to work it out after a couple of spikes.
I am wondering if my rather unexpected blood test results from what was a routine test might explain all this? Increase in Serum C reactive protein. Borderline liver function test (never had that before!). Low lymphocyte count. Low red blood cell count. Low haematocrit count. Low vitamin D - now being treated. But HbA1c 35.
I am very fit and well. Lots of exercise, sleep well and eat well.
Should I be worried or did I have a lurking infection somewhere?

What did your GP surgery say about those results?

Nothing, as yet, apart from treating me for a vitamin D deficiency.

GP has just contacted me. Almost certainly a lurking inflammatory something-or-other. Repeat blood test next week. Already feeling better and already needing less insulin. Actually had a hypo yesterday as I have had a week of needing extra. Running tonight!

When you're ill as a T1 - BG rises as your body dumps more stored carbs into your bloodstream to help fight the infection / illness.

Normal activity is to raise insulin basal rates (background) by about 1/3 and see if thats the right amount (its experimentation to find the right level)

One you return to 'wellness' you can drop down to normal levels - sounds like thats whats happened here.
Have a search for Diabetes sick day rules for more info

What a difference a week makes! Far more predictable CGM and finger prick tests. Insulin requirements much reduced. Funny old condition!
