Breakfast ideas?

The hardest meal of the day at the moment seems to be breakfast for me.

I'm trying to have a low/no carb breakfast, but don't want to be a burden on my poor wife... so, are there any "magic" foods that are very low carb, that don't require cooking?

Something quick and easy to do in the morning (especially early mornings when I have to get out)?

non cooking breakfast Ideas (takes less than 5 mins to make a cheese omelette )

Smoked mackerel
kippers
tinned sardines

Combination of
ham, boiled eggs (boiled the night before.)try all them different cheeses, frankfurters, fish sticks, cold meats, pate,

I usually have a combination of all the above for breakfast and lunch that's if i dont have a cheese, mushroom, onion, peppers, 2 egg omelette or egg and bacon.

It supplies more than enough carbs for my requirements.

funny you should say that, I'm up now cooking the wife's omelette for breakfast in the mornings.

Hi again

Try German dark bread with low fat cheese (max 12%) or low fat dried meat (no butter - sorry - and if only very very thin) - drink tea or milk - but if milk then no cheese!Eat a full cucumber! You need 500 gramm and above fresh vegs a day so you better start in the morning! If you walk to work eat two dried raisins....if you drive - stay off sugar in the morning!

Eat six times a day - 3 meals must be pure vegs - and use fresh vegs as snacks - no cereal bars, nuts, etc. DONT eat any meat that is close to bones - too fat!Dont eat after 8 at night!

Use redwine vinegar for dressing for salads.

Test your blood sugar and decide on how many raisins you can eat per day - I eat 1-2 per hour to give me sugar enough to run my daily system. I wake 6-7.00 in the morning (before when diagnosed 10.00).

Do 30 mins of exercise per day or walk 10,000 steps.

Sauer cucumbers are also good as snack - but watch your salt intake (brings high blood pressure).

The dark bread is good as it slows sugar intake into your system!

Whats your medication precise? It sounds to me as if you have not been put right yet - you need to get your levels right! Maybe you need more or different meds?

Hi Kim,

I'm a T2 on Metformin, only diagnosed last week so am building up from 1 Metformin after tea to 3 after all meals. The GP advised me to increase by 1 tablet a week, so I'm in my second week and taking 2 Metformin, one after breakfast, one after tea.

So you're right, I'm not on full meds yet, although I'm not sure if Metformin is something that stays in the system for a long time, or if it just "combats" the last meal (I've posted a separate thread about it to try and understand!).

I sometimes have an avocado for breakfast, with a little light french dressing - lovey, low carb and no cooking!

Hi Gov

Usually the Metformin just combats the last meal - so you must be careful at night when you have eaten your dinner and taken your Metformin 30 mins after the meal as if your eat again hereafter your numbers next morning is horrid!!!! And I mean bad....so if you have 14.9 when you wake up it can have to do with your pop-corn intake or whatever infront of the telly the night before.....so really if you are out injoying yourself one night you should take another Metformin 30 mins after coming home from a party - a lot of meds I know - but in my experience no other way. Its also good to get on your fitness-bike before going to bed (I persume you have one - if not get one in a hurry!) - or make love to your wife(lol) before going to sleep.

I live on strict diet throughout the week and enjoy myself on Fri and Saturdays where I use 1 more Metformin and 5units more insulin per day to keep my sugar down....I know I probably shouldnt do it this way but my god is life dull if you must keep diet at all times....I exercise every day so I think its OK.

On Fri and Sats I go to my favourite restaurants and eats whatever I like and have a couple glasses of red and one whisky diet coke while clubbing.

Japanese food is very good for you - its a lot of different things (many vegs) and the row fish is good and the portions are small. Here in Shanghai we have many Japanese restaurants and I go twice a week. The Sake is also OK - you can have one small glass and drink tea - the Sake will help bring your sugar down after meal.

I dont understand why your doctor need a week to check how you function on 1 tablet Metformin - I find that long time - this means that it will take 3-4-5 weeks before your on your right medication - maybe even longer - thats no good for your health as every day your not on right level is dangerous to your system....If 1 tablet is not doing the job you know after 3 days normally and if your 14-17 now then its first of all about getting you down to 5-6 so two tablets from start should be OK anyway....

I think you need to address this issue with your doctor. There is even the possibility in having an insulin drop (500ml) which can take you down within 2-3 hours and then your doctor can test you from there. You must be carefully not to develop Ketones or neuropathy due to too high level of sugar over a certain period of time.

Have you had a urin test?

Have you had a test for your fat in blood?

You need to make sure that you get a full check-over as you have had this illness for many years already and you need to make sure everything is ok inside your body.

I think your priority must be to get your sugar levels right as quickly as possible now your on full blown T2 and not wait 3-4-5-6 weeks.

Hi Kim,
I'm not getting at you (honest!) but I must pick you up on several of your points.

Metformin remains effective for 6 hours, so the last dose taken will generally still be working when you have your next meal.

Metformin should always be taken with food, not 30 minutes after a meal.

Nobody should ever take medicines when they feel like it. You take the dose prescribed at the times recommended by your doctor (you might want to throw the rule book out of the window - but please don't encourage other posters to do the same).

A week is not a long time at all for a doctor to see how effective the prescribed dose is. Because you need something different doesn't mean that everyone does. We are all different and have different reactions and tolerances to medication. Metformin is not a miracle drug but it provides short, mid and long term benefits and many doctors would want to see how you do at a particular dose level for up to a month before adjusting the dose.

The particular poster that you are advising has today mentioned on another thread that he is already down to 5 and below - just how low do you expect him to go?

Hi - if he goes 14.9 on a piece of bread - he is not exactly put right on his med is he?

Dear Dennis

I have some more time now and I think I should explain myself a bit better.

Im on 6 meals a day and Metformin normally lasts 4-6 hours and is as such for most of us to combat one meal. - As Im on 6 meals I want to make sure that my 3 Metformins per day can combat 2 meals for sure at a time, which is the reason why I take my tablet 30 mins after meal (it works just as well).

Now - you might strictly stick to what ur GP is advising in terms of quantities of meds and diet - I however is a true believer in selfmanagement; - my readings dictates my intake; - if my readings are very low i might either choose to leave out a tablet or throw in a chocolate bar. I test 3 times a day as a routine - so Im totally in control. 5 days a week Im strictly on my diet - but 2 days I cannot be bothred so I trhow more meds in to have some fun in life and keep my readings low - I allow myself this flexibility - my right to selfmanagement....

Mr. Gov might very well be a 5 after his daily tab - but the day is long and have more meals than one and as such his numbers seems to be all over the place.....I can test 6 times a day - each 2 hours after each meal - and Im 5.5-6.5 each time I dont believe our dear friend Gov is that far just yet....

KIM

Hi Kim, thanks for the clarification

I've reworked my diet since Monday and my average reading is 5.3 across the last 3 days. Highest reading post-meal is 8.1, waking at between 4.8 and 5.

The high reading for me last week was because of trying out Shredded Wheat, and I'd imagine as I experiement with new foods I'll find other that send me way up.

But, overall, I think I have gained control so far, all I need to do is keep at it
