BS levels high despite increased insulin

Hi all. I am just starting to get my diet under control, but because by BS levels have been high, I am now taking 32 units of insulin at night and 20 in the morning, together with metformin and Amaryl. My BS levels are slightly lower than they have been, but not significantly. Fasting is around 12, two hours after meals around 18. My diabetes doctor is aware of this. Does it take some time for BS levels to decrease, even if the diet is improved?

No, I have just been prescribed the insulin at night, and in the morning. I'm Type 2, and until recently was on oral medication only, but I have found it so hard to stick to a diabetes-friendly diet. I am now trying to get my diet under control.

Once you do get your diet under control you will find that your BS will drop. What are you doing about your diet just now?

It's the diet that will give you control. Keep those carbs down.

Hi Sue. I used to graze all the time, with a weakness for chocolate, cakes and biscuits. I now have oats for breakfast, either with dried fruit or hot with Splenda, I have a diabetes-recipe home made muffin mid-morning, either an avocado and a kiwi for lunch, or cooked vegetables with fish or meat, and a stew or wholewheat pasta, or similar in the evening. I am not a big lover of lots of salad or vegetables - before trying to be good, I would eat mostly carbs with protein and just a little veg at meals. I have cheated - the odd biscuit, or Jelly Baby - but I now appreciate how serious my illness is. I still can't get over the feeling of being deprived though!

Have you tried reducing the amount of carbs that you have, especially in the evening? Reducing portion sizes of pasta ,rice etc may help bring down your BS. Do you have a carb counter book to check how much carbs you are eating during the day. Collins Gem does a good one, pocket sized and not too expensive.

I couldn't handle those carbs without seriously increasing my medication. You are eating quite a lot. Have you calculated it/

I didn't think my carbs were at all high with that sort of diet. What am I eating that's so high in carbs, and what could I replace it with?

hya,
what kind of things do u eat in a typical day?
collins do a small carb counting book which does help you see exactly what carbs u are eating

Hi Totsy ... well, I have been eating all the bad things, but I really am starting to get myself sorted out, but I will need help from you guys - you're all so much more educated on this than me. I have ordered that book from Amazon and hope it helps.

hya nannoo,
feel free to pm me if you want
