BS reading spikes 1hr after meal testing.

One hour after a low carb McDonalds lunch today my BS readings were an alarming 10.2. Then 7.1 at 2hrs then 4.3 before dinner. Mcd lunch was a grilled chicken salad wrap (38g carb) with carrots sticks (6g), and cup of tea.

I can only assume it is the white flour in the tortilla wrap that caused the spike..... But so thin I did not expect it.
I think this shows how important it is to test 1 hour after meals..... I have been told to test before meals!!. But this would clearly miss the spike and give a nice healthy low reading!!!!

Maybe these short terms spikes do no harm, but my gut feeling is they do, especially LADA's.

Hi Ian 10.2 doesn't sound too high to be fair so try not to be so hard on yourself. Just tested myself and I'm 11.3. Sometimes I'll be 17. What insulin are you taking?
 
Should always test before meals and ~2hrs post. A sharp, short acting, post prandial rise isn't unexpected. This occurs in 'normal' folk as it takes a wee bit of time for pancreas to react etc. We have the issue that it doesn't react and the spike can last longer. Had long convo with my endocrinologist about this and the odd, short spike does no harm. It is the prolonged high sugars that are the prob. Also 10.2 isn't that high for a diabetic. Usually aim for 4-7 before meals, and 7-11 after. D
 
Hi D the thing is- if I'm going to under 5 the this is when I start to have a hypo. I'm usually 7/8/9 which is good for me but then again everybody is different and everybody is different sizes and needs different amounts of insulin I suppose

Not on any insulin and your at that reading you should be proud of yourself! Give yourself a pat on the back! Honestly we'll done don't fret about It too much! Remember stress and worry raise sugar levels! Xx
 
Yeah totally agree; if your not on any insulin and have those numbers you're pretty much normal lol
Why are you not on treatment as a diabetic? Did you personally refuse? D

I can tell when I am around the 4/5ish mark and can virtually predict my BG value when testing at that point (which is good as dnt miss hypos). Also, for an 86Kg bloke I am only on 4iu morning, and 6iu evening (sometimes I up the dose is lazy day or know evening meal will be a tad bigger/more carby). Was originally diagnosed with a BG of 26mmol/L; now my highest has been 18 (lasting ~1hr) but after a naughty deep pan pizza so my bad there.

How did u feel when u when you were diagnosed? Like health wise? Feel ill?

I am LADA / T1.5.
Diagnosed T2 sept 2013, then thru a GAD test diagnosed LADA in December which means I will be T1 soon. Dr says I will be on insulin within months, I am doing what I can to defer.

Well might be wise to get onto a v.low dose insulin atm. That way pressure is relieved from your pancreas a bit and u may be able to prolong it etc. Hats off trying to manage things without, but why delay?
 
Dr says my BS readings are too low for insulin..... To contact him when my pre-breakfast readings are in double figures.... But I will be contacting well before that.

Did I read right... "pre-breakfast double figures"?? Might want a 2nd opinion Ian. I work as a vet and if a dog had pre-meal double figures they'd be fully tested then trialled on insulin :-s
Do you not have a ref endocrinologist managing you? Diabetes nurse?
 
Yes, double figures pre breakfast. That's what the diabetic consultant dr, with D- nurse specialist said..... But I will not be leaving it that late. My current average pre breakfast readings are just under 5.0, I intend to contact him again when around 7, and ask for insulin.

Wraps are very very high GI hence the spike! I had one when I was first diagnosed and shot up to 12mmol! I Don't eat them anymore lol.

My consultant said the same, he won't put me on insulin until I am in double figures quite regularly due to hypo risk.
Your morning readings are amazing by the way because I'm always between 7 and 9mmol without fail and have been since diagnosis. I can count on one hand the number of times I have been under 7mmol pre-breakfast since I was diagnosed 14months ago!

The worst thing for my BS is still chips, I don't eat them anymore as anytime I have it's left me on 14mmol 2hrs later which is the highest I have ever gone since diagnosis.. I tend to handle sugar better than carbs surprisingly... ie:- biscuits or fruit or yogurts do not leave me on massive spikes but a few chips and I'm through the roof lol


Diagnosed with GD in 2010, Completely disappeared postpartum. Re-diagnosed December 2012 with type 1.5 diabetes, age 26, BMI 22 currently controlled by only Metformin, 500mg twice a day.
