bumps in legs

Hi guys,

I had surgery on my tummy in June as a consequence the whole area is painful and is likely to be for another few weeks.

This means I have only been using my thighs to inject so no rotation (which is what I would normally do), today I have noticed small bumps on each thigh and am assuming that its a build up of insulin. They're smaller than a pea in size but am wondering if there is anything I can do to get rid of them? I'm going to try later to inject just above my tummy and maybe try my arms (gags!) but does anybody else have other suggestions??

They'll just disappear in time, just stay clear of the area for a while until they do.

As @Diakat says use your bum also, on MDI I would inject my bolus doses in my stomach and arms and basal into my bum and legs.
 
agree with @Diakat and @noblehead
I always used my bum and thighs for long acting and fast acting in tummy and arms ( arms are a bit of a fiddle -- but definitely worth using )

Aargh, we're all equally guilty of dragging this post off-topic, but really have to say that Father Ted is going to be one of those timeless things like Fawlty Towers we'll watch in 20 years time and it'll still be funny.

That one liner about the cows still cracks me up: "This one is small, that one is far away."
 
@Scott-C you read my mind. I was visiting a friend in Toronto a while back and we passed dome posh apartments one of which had a grand piano displayed in a big window. My friend and I immediately went into a 'is that piano small or very far away?' chat.
And I still giggle at the thought if priests in the M&S lingerie section.
 
Quite a tricky question, yes. I actually used to do all my basal in the thighs and bolus in the abdomen, and now completely changed.

The best place to do the basal IMO is the bum, as suggested by other members. You can split it into 4 parts: let versus right and top versus down. I rotate every week. For instance, every day of week 1 I use my right top side, the week 2 left top, week 3 right down, week 4 left down side. This way there are 3 full weeks for a part to fully heal, whereas injecting once every 4 day feels like it is not fully healed, and thus builds up over the years...

For the bolus, I use my arms. But ideally you may want to use your thighs and your arms and rotate every day for instance? I am less experienced for managing site rotation for the bolus yet.

To be honest I was quite embarrassed about moving to the bum and arms. It had to be clunky and I was feeling that for god know which reason the insulin would act completely differently, or it would kill me or something. It took me three days to have the courage to move to my bum from when I decided I wanted to... Take your time, and keep in mind nothing crazy will happen


PS: Is bum the right word to say in this context? Sorry I have no clue, just trying to be polite and this is not my native language.

I've got a branch of John Lewis just up the road from me. The escalators land me in the lingerie section, so I end up scuttling around looking for directions to safety in the mens department! Haven't seen any priests hiding behind racks of bras, so maybe they've learned their lesson!

I'm thinking that DAFNE courses should do some real world challenges like, here's a box set of Father Ted, sit down with that for 8 hours, with a box of popcorn, figure out the time shape of insulin/carbs for that and see how you pan out at the end of that.

Yes bum is correct - slightly ruder than bottom but pretty acceptable in company.

And your English is great.
 
Does anyone know why the bum is NOT a recommended injection location for Lantus and Levemir? I've been using it for my basal since diagnosis and not had any issues, but I am curious why the official pharmaceutical company leaflets and website guidance on injection sites never recommend the bum?

Do they actually advise against using the bum or just don't mention it in their patient leaflet?

I can't say I had any issues using my bum for lantus.

Me too. I don't think they specifically advise against it but it's never one of the sites they say you can use.
