Hello Jamrox

Sorry, I can't say yes or no for definite, but I would imagine it would be available world wide, so probably in Portugal I hope someone who has holidayed there will be able to be of more help.

Thanks Netty. My sister is there at the moment and Im joining her on Tuesday , shes had difficulty buying sugar free lemonade. I know this sounds nuts but its to have as a mixer with my vodka at night once we are back in her apartment. I ll probably drink water during the day . Im going to look in Newcastle Airport and see if I can get some small bottles of 7up zero just incase I think. Im diet controlled at the moment and eat a healthy diet most of the time. I have changed to the good carbohydrate diet because I couldn't do the no carb .I know I won't be as strict on holiday but just don't want to use my sugar allowance on full sugar drinks . Would rather have a cheat in a cake or bit of chocolate . Ive got my bloof sugar readings under control so don't want to go off the rails

Oh thats a shame. I vw been good but I am having a wee refreshment after my dinner on holiday . Lol

Hi jamrox,

I don't know about Portugal but I recently went to Majorca and you couldn't get anything but Coke light/coke zero. It absolutely did my head in as I hate diet coke with vodka (although I like it on its own through the day) and I usually have vodka, lemon(diet),and lime.

If I could go back in time to before I got to Majorca I would take 2 things with me without a doubt:

1: Diet anything other than coke!
2: Canderel or another low calorie sweetener as they did not have this either which meant a cup of tea or cereal (low GI) were out of the question for me for the whole holiday!

They may have had these things in normal towns and supermarkets though, my experience is really just of a holiday resort and town centre

Diagnosed with GD in 2010, Completely disappeared postpartum. Re-diagnosed December 2012 with type 1.5 diabetes, age 26, BMI 22 currently controlled by only Metformin, 500mg twice a day.

Please don't worry. Most places in the world sell diet/zero everything. It may help others as well as you, so good post. Most spanish speaking countries have a drink with "sin", meaning without, ie:beer, coke, etc.

Good luck and enjoy your break!

Well had a ball in Portugal .
I bought 8 bottles of diet 7up in Newcastle Airport thankfully.
Didn't see any diet drinks except coke in shops or anywhere until the last day.
I would love to know what diabetics drink in Portugal. Had a few glasses of wine with my dinner but managed to keep sugars ok , not perfect but around 6 to 8 .

I lived in Portugal for about 6 months about 7 years ago and we lived in Central Portugal, I can imagine in the Algarve you can get diet drinks but imagine the further North you go the less choice you will have.

My experience was most folks drink the gut rot wine that they make out of their own grapes. Tasted like diesel and I haven't touched red wine since I got back. Brandy was about £5 a bottle as the exchange rate was really good then. We got 1.60 euros for every £.....

A lot of the expats we got introduced to drunk too much. I drink but not as much as they did. I'm glad I didn't stay there as I know what I'm like and would probably be a complete **** head now....

I couldn't buy decent tea. Unless there was a Lidls nearby and fresh milk was almost unheard of. There was plenty of UHT though.
And decent cheddar cheese was hard to get too. There were specific 'English' shops where you could buy Marmite, bacon, sausages, sliced white bread and corned beef.... They were usually run by expats and the shops were in their own houses.

I have very fond memories of Portugal.

Which part were you in ?? Was it the Algarve ??

Hi we were in Ferregudo near Portamaio , lovely place.
Im glad I took diet lemonade with me.

I'm just careful about avoiding 'aspartame' in any diet/sugar free c/drinks.

I usually drink lots of black tea. Had experience of to much aspartame lol
