BYETTA

Is anyone still replying on here? Just really looking for some support while taking byetta, I've been on it a week and stopped as couldn't bear the sick feeling, my blood glucose tests have been fantastic and I do feel full but the headaches and sickness are really hard to cope with while working and running around all day any tips or advice would be very welcome x

I did not have any sickness or headaches but did well on weight loss and blood sugar levels. For the sickness you can probably get your GP to prescribe domperidone.

I have just joined this forum. I have been a diabetic, Type 2, since July 2001, so that's 11 years now. I have just seen a new diabetes specialist with in the past week and he has changed my medications. I was on Novarapid before each meal and Lantus before bed. I am now on Novarapid before each meal (different amounts depending on what my bsl's are like) and then Byetta, 5units as soon as I wake up in the morning and then 5 again before bed. I started this on Saturday the 15 of Sept 2012.
My back ground is I am overweight but have had gastric banding done in 2008. I have lost 66kgs since the operation and I am currently sitting at 104kgs.
Since starting the Byetta on Saturday I have been nauseated and I have developed this horrible pain in my abdomen/side region. I am determined to work through these things as I think once they settle down Byetta will be the best thing for me.
I was just wondering if anyone know roughly how long the nausea and pain will last?

Any advise is welcome

Welcome to the forum

I was lucky and had no side effects but many report some initial nausea.

I was on Byetta but have now moved onto the once a week injection, Bydureon (same medication,different name and a lot easier to use!!). When I was on the twice a day injections, I seem to remember that the instructions were to take the injections one hot before breakfast and one hour before my evening meal to get tge most benefit from the drug. You might want to check with your consultant about the timings as the hour thing is in the instructions I think.

I was on byetta for 2 weeks and couldn't bare it any longer the nausea didn't ease up all day! I also was told to take one hour before meals! Not sure about pain in ur side? I wonder wat is causing that? My diabetes nurse has prescribed me another injection not sure wat that's called I pick it up today I'll let u know if it's any better!!! i was going to ask my nurse practitioner to change my metformin for byetta, as the metformin RUNS was controling my life!, i thought byetta would not give you the RUNS!

I had no experience of the runs with Byetta as it works by slowing down gastric transit.

Hi all,
i am taking metformin 500 mgs twice a day, it makes my life Hell, the famous RUNS, so my nurse practitioner has changed it to the slow release type. i stll get the ocassional run twice a week, but i had a bad expirience on holiday recently!
i have decided to ask for Byetta,
can i have honest replies?
do you still get the RUNS with it.?

My DN has mentioned Byetta to me as a possible treatment - having done some reading up I have a couple of questions I wondered if anyone could help me with

1) Do I have to notify DVLA of my condition if I'm on Byetta - as a professional driver I really want to avoid notifying DVLA for as long as I can!

2) How well does it work for someone who doesn't eat regular meals at the traditional times - as a taxi driver I tend to take a packed lunch to work with me each day, and "graze" on a few mouthfuls between jobs as and when I can! it's rare for me to sit down and eat a proper meal meal apart from on my day off.

3) just how bad are the side effects? I've had to stop taking metformin, as even the SR version was causing side effects that were not nice when you are sometimes 30+ mins away from the nearest toilet!!

Wow... just got the results back from my trial period and my hbA1C is 7 with no real effort at all! The consultant is really pleased and I'll be starting Bydureon now. My only regret? Not being put on it years ago!
 
Started on Byetta this morning from hospital after being admitted with ketoacidosis in the early hours of Friday morning. Doc now thinks I'm an 'adult onset type 1' whatever that is. They've taken me off the Metfartin while I'm still acedotic but are talking about using the Byetta in conjunction with Metfartin and Sitagliptin'

The whole thing has scared the bejesus out of me!! :shock:

If you are not now producing your own insulin then none of the medications you mention will help control you blood sugars. You should be given a c-peptide test to determine whether you are still producing insulin and if not then insulin injections will definitely be needed.

I feel like I'm flying solo. When admitted, I was told I was adult onset type 1. Now I'm on Byetta which isn't for type 1s. I'm seeing the consultant tomorrow and don't know what to say. The nurses comment that my sugars are ok but they're in the early teens before meals and late teens for after meals and before bed. Admittedly they're lower than the 22 I was admitted with but I feel like I'm getting acute management for a chronic condition. I still aspire to 'normal' readings rather than ok ones.

My U and Es are off kilter too but, again, I'm told they're 'ok'.

I still feel unwell and feel very disempowered. :thumbdown: Is it too much to know which type of diabetes I'm on?

I ve been on byetta since friday, today is tuesday, I get pains in my sides and bad naseaua, first day of side effects, was so dizzy got really worried something was seriously wrong untill I remember dns said there will be side effects, how long till the side effects settle down?
 
today the vomiting started, good job I only had a mix berry and soya milk smoothie for breakfast. I hate to see what it would be like when I go from 5 to 10au.
 
Sorry that you are having such bad problems and hope that they settle down soon. I have found that both Byetta and Bydureon produce great results and, for me, no side effects. You can get medication that might help with nauseous side effects called domperidone.
