caffeine and urination habits

They say that drinking coffee and tea can cause increased urine production, is there a way to actually measure this?
Like say you drank 2 litres of tea would you void exactly 2 litres or more at some point? Would you total urine output for the day be increased?

I'm having some slight increased urination today (more than 2 litres already), however I have drank a fair bit (mainly tea etc), about 2 litres today.
Even so, yesterday I hardly went at all, only about 3 times and total void of 1.4 litres.

With high blood sugar, wouldn't the increase in urination be more frequent and consistent?

Caffeine is a diuretic, so yes, it will cause you to urinate more as it tries to clear excess fluid from the system.

You will have to consult someone with far more knowledge than I have to answer your other questions.

So for example, if I drank a large cup of green tea (which has caffeine) 500ml, would I be expected to void 500ml say an hour later or would this be more? If it's more, then where does the extra urine come from??

We are composed on average of 60% water. We take in water through drinking and eating. We lose water through breathing, sweating, urinating etc.

When not bedridden, the best way at home to measure and compare your fluid intakes and urinary output are:
1. Record the volume of fluids you are talking.
2. Collect your urine in a urinary bowl and measure.

Intake and output will not be equal because there are other factors affecting urinary output such metabolic rate, weather, sweating, kidney function, diarrhoea or gastrointestinal diseases etc.

However, if your gastrointestinal and kidney functions are normal you should not worry but enjoy your life.

The measuring procedures for hospitalised patients especially on IV fluids and those in residential care homes are different.

CORRECTION: 1. Record the volume of fluids you are taking.

It is likely to be less as there are other ways of ridding the body of fluids - it doesn't all come out as urine, and some is retained

Don't forget that food is also a source of water, particularly fruits, vegetables and fungi. Your fluid balance needs to factor this in. Do you have stews, casseroles, soups for example? Also, fluid requirements vary depending on body mass as well as the other factors mentioned above.

When I first started working at the mines, we were told at the induction session about dehydration and that when you drink a 7 fl/oz beer you urinate 10 fl/oz.

This was a part of the useless info that the HR dept put out to keep the grunts sober.
