In discussion with a non-diabetic friend, he made what I thought was an odd statement when he said 'yeah but you have to watch how much caffeine you have at it affects your insulin'
He wasn't talking about energy drinks or anything like that and he wasn't getting confused with sugar content. Is it true that caffeine (coffee, tea etc) affects my insulin/diabetes?
It may do as its a stimulant causing the body to work faster so may cause the insulin to work faster instead of having a steady profile. As with everything though moderation is the key.
Ah ok, I'd never thought of like that at all! Why is it that even after nearly 30yrs of being diabetic nobody in the medical profession has ever mentioned this!
There is alot they havnt mentioned to me but have found out for myself. Always feel a bit angry when I do cause I think I should of been told. Thats where forums like these help as you learn from other people in a similar situation, going through the same things.
One or two coffees every now and then throughout the day doesn't seen to affect me. But if I have alot of caffeine close together with my qa I find I will be alot lower than normal so I spread my caffeine out now. Thats just me though.
possibly might be, I also had alot of afternoon hypos from drinking alot of diet drinks containing caffeine. I switched to caffeine free and water and hypos did get less frequent. One way to test, try not having caffeine. I found this hard at first as was addicted to it lol. If that fails maybe look at your morning dose of qa.
I haven't noticed any difference whatsoever - I was just very curious because my friend mentioned it and wondered if it was something we should be aware of
I am a coffee-geek. I drink a double espresso for breakfast and usually two (and sometimes three) further double espressos during the day. I know from regular readings that it has no effect on my blood sugar as a Type 2. I also drink a lot of water and no alcohol, no fruit juice and no other drinks at all.
