Now coming up to 9 days with my new Libre 2 CGM and despite being on a fairly strict carnivore diet, my blood sugar is all over the place from 6 to 9 mmol even on metformin. I've also added berberine as well, because metformin just gives me heart palpitations really bad.
I have had a little drop of milk in with my tea ( maybe 200ml total a day) and occasional cheese, so I'm wondering if that dairy might be interfering.
Or there may be a possibility that my body is taking longer to heal than I thought even on carnivore.
I think the culprit is gluconeogenesis but the metformin doesn't seem to be holding that in check at all.
I've noticed BS rising around 4-6 am.
Anyone else with similar problem?
Mine is 6-9, or 5-9 up and down between those like a roller coaster. I think that's normal.
Bg is affected by many things other than just food. Sleep, or lack of it, exercise, stress, temperature, illness medications. It's never totally level as your body calls on glucose and insulin to function
I don’t think a range of 3 mmols over the course of a day is ‘all over the place’. I’d want to be lower than that, especially on carnivore, but the numbers are by no means disastrous. Have you cross checked the Libre with a finger stick at all? I often find that the Libre runs a bit high, so you could be running a bit lower than you think.
It does for some people, me included. Not that it stops me eating it (despite my best efforts) but it does seem to raise me higher than the carb content would suggest it should, and for longer.
How long have you been doing carnivore? As you suggest, the body can take a while to heal. If you can manage to take out the dairy and give it a bit longer I would, just to see whether it is an option for you.

Well that's a consolation. My sleep is absolute rubbish, always wake a 4-5 am.wide awake...Think that might be the cortisol rising? Im trying to get back on exercise, but tiredness is a bit of an issue with carnivore. I've been on it 4 months, with a couple of fall off the wagon, but am now on it seriously. even dropped tea and coffee, which strangely, I dont miss at all. Just got over a big UTI, put my CRP up to 976 and my PSA 24. Going to get that sussed in a month o so, but its down to 8 now, hopefully dropping.
I just about to suggest that it could be the UTI, as it effects glucose levels, but also the liver could be dumping at around that time, ready for action, which is a pain. yes sleep deprivation, also effects levels.
surely you are not just eating meat. green veg, salads, egg, fish and so on can be put on the menu. Makes it a bit more interesting for you.
Any stress physical or emotional causes a release of hormones which prompt our liver to release glucose.
A poor night, lack of sleep is certainly stressful.
