morning,

every morning i try and test my blood - usually its around the 12 mark - which is high i know - today it was 13.9. i'm just not sure why. I just don't seem able to get it down to a reasonable level

I was in the same place just a few weeks ago. My morning readings tended to be around 10.6 and would come down to 8's or 9's during the day. This was despite being on 2 x 500mg metformin twice daily. Under duress I agreed to also take 1 x 100mg Sitagliptin daily (I take a lot of pills and don't like it) but before it had any chance I took a "funny turn" and had to come off the diabetic meds totally. I was really worried as I was sure my readings would go through the roof but I followed the advice of my GP which is effectively the info given to all newbies by cugila or sue - watch the carb intake.

The minute I heard the words "low carb" I automatically thought "Atkins" which I didn't fancy because of the high fat content. Instead I am following the South Beach Diet and it is working for me - it is low carb but it watches the bad fats too. I like the discipline as it gives you your menus to follow and despite it being a heck of a lot of food I am finally losing weight but more importantly my BG readings are gradually improving.

I've had another HbA1c and despite having had 2 weeks with no meds (plus it was done early and still included 2 of my "bad" weeks when I was ill) it has dropped from 9.6 to 9.1 . Even more exciting from my point of view my finger prick tests are improving. I now tend to be 8.0 in the mornings (still a bit high but getting there) but during the day I am getting down to 6.4 - 6.7 and only rising to 7.5 when I eat (I am also reassured that the readings are also dropping back quicker after eating). I am constantly testing to find out what foods affect my BG significantly and will readily admit my fingertips are a bit sore at the moment but, I am finally building up a knowledge of what foods work for me. These results are better than I was having with the full dose of meds and even now I am only on 1 x 500mg metformin as they try to wean me back onto my meds. It has let me know that the low carb diet is working for me.

We're all different and this diet is hard going at the moment because it is a lot of cooking, a lot of testing and a lot of checking nutritional content. It has helped me make reasoned choices though as now when I see a high carb content on a lable I am asking myself "do I REALLY want to waste that amount of carbs on this?". I'll shortly be starting to introduce some more good carbs back into my diet but in small quantities and with yet more testing to monitor the effect.

I am not saying it will work for you but it is worth a try - you have to be prepared to put the effort in though. I have now started to have a cooking day, or I am making double quantities of everything so I can portion and freeze. So I am building up a supply of low carb meals now. My family are eating the same foods - they just have some added carbs which I pass on so I am not having to make separate meals either.

I do exercise as well and that is always good for a positive effect on my BG.
