Carb, net carbs

Why the difference, what's the norm. For example on the Atkins low darb diet a Endulge Chocolate Coconut bar 35g says per bar, 12.2g carbs, net carbs 2.1g, 1.9g sugars, it has polyols 10.1g, it says on packet "counting carbs" my answer is yes I am. It states the net carbs count helps you count carbs that impact on blood sugar, polyols should be subtracted from the total carbs since they minimally impact blood sugar. 12.2g carbs - 10.1g polyols = 2,1g net carbs. So this whole bar is 2.1g carbs, 1.9g sugars so in theory fine to have as a snack. I have had these before I was diabetic and taste great. So is his ok?

Some of the Atkins stuff works fine for me, but the bars that you are talking about don't. It's a bit weird. The thing is it's a US product and they have different ways of labelling carbohydrate (for instance including non digestible carbs in the total - whereas in sensible old Blighty we ignore that stuff in terms of carb count). The polyols don't get absorbed by the gut (and so by the way make good laxatives...) and so shouldn't increase your blood sugar, but those bars do have a lot of protein so will increase blood sugars for me.

But as Spiral has said the real answer will be found on your meter.

I eat the breakfast bars occasionally without trouble but shy away from the other ones as I just don't quite believe them.

What does your metre tell you?

Dunno, not had a whole bar, I cut a qtr of it just to taste it about 2 hours ago, was really nice, my BG is currently 5.9.

It's got 3.1g protein, I think I am ok with protien, I eat a lot of meat and eggs and am ok with that.

I'm a bit with Dillinger here. The indulgence bar sent my BGs up, but the Atkins daybreak bars didn't affect me at all. And I like them, so double win!
With polyols, Dillinger is right (of course, smart xxse) about them officially counting as zero, BUT, read a good article about polyols. It reckoned in summary that they DO have an effect (as I'd expect) and that you should count HALF of them in your carb count. This would make your indulgence bar 7 grams carbs, still OK for a snack I'd say. But test and see is the answer I guess as with all things.

I might try the rest of the 3/4qtrs of the bar tommorow for a test run. I got a peanut caramel one too looking at me

Right I had an Atkins endulge choc coconut bar for research purposes. Results are:

Starting BG - 6.0
+ 1 hour - 7.4
+ 2 hour - 6.7

So though spiked it stayed within acceptable levels, but I still don't like going over 7.0.

While on the ND I have used Atkins shakes, and my BG's have gone right down. I think as with everything, it's all trial and error, or eat and test. My understanding is they really do have quite a laxative effect, so quarter to a half, maybe sensible if only for that reason. Atkins products are all low carb, but as with everything its the amount of carbs you have all in one go. I have never had any of the Atkins bars, as I don't ever crave chocolate. In the early days though, I craved corn snacks so badly, but that's gone now as well.
