Type of diabetes
Type 2
I’ve got this awful bug which has an cough with it , I also have asthma and had to go to the out of hours dr yesterday morning as I was having problems my sugars lately at between 7-8, The Dr put me on steroids and strong antibiotics as I have a lung infection, do these cause a increase in bs as I’ve jumped to 26, I’m on insulin and never been this high before, is there anything I can do as can’t exercise with my breathing, x

Not sure about the antibiotics but steroids are definitely very likely to increase blood sugars.

Are you on long acting insulin alone or do you use short acting as well? Can you contact your diabetes team/doctor?

I had a bug recently with horrible bgs (just being infected not to mention steroids can cause this). Do contact your DSN for the 'sick day rules'. As a type 1 on insulin, I was advised to test every 2 hours and inject to correct but you will need advice to do this safely if you are taking a basal dose only (not injecting at mealtimes too?) . Levels at 26 will make you feel so grotty so please say hydrated even if you can't face food. Hope you feel better soon.

Carrie - Steroids definitely are known to cause rises in blood sugars, plus of course that fact that you're unwell, and fighting an ifectionwon't be helping either.

Carrie, I appreciate you are T2, but do you havr the means to test yourself for ketones? Blood or urine strips?

How are you feeling in yourrself, with your numbers that high?

If you have concerns, you could call 111 for more specific advice.

Hi,
Hope you feel better soon, hope you can contact your diabetes team.
See your GP if you don't have a DSN.
Take care

I'm too on insulin and when not well it can cause disruption to my daily routine.
I find keeping to my insulin and testing routine plus more testing and even just eating to keep my bgs down as a form of medication. The foods I choose are all low carb thou.
Do you live alone or can you access low carb foods very very easily?
Instead of grapes from well wishers you need cheese or other proteins but ensure not a cause for choking in coughing moments. Maybe avoid nuts?
The key is to keep to your insulin routine, testing and eat to keep those 26s away.
Avoid ice cream of any sort as cold items on the throat contract your airways.
Keep eating but be very chosey on what you eat.
High carb foods will make your bgs go higher.
Have you been testing regularly? What are your last 3 readings?

Your diabetes care team can help you further so don't hesitate to call them even for just a dn callback.
I have to leave a message and take my phone to bed.

I hope your insulin therapy keeps you from further complications.
Without mine I'd be in a very fine state. It's ideal in such curcumstances if taken correctly.
Pull out the literature you were given with your insulin to refresh your mind how it works. Mine has sick days rules included.
