Cataract Removal

Hi there,
Was just wondering if any type 1 diabetics has had a cataract removed.
I've got retinopathy, I've had a victrectomy eye operation back in 2001, where they remove the eye gel and also had alot of laser treatment. All is stable now and has been for some years. Fingers crossed. I was told more than likely I would get a cataract. I've had it some years now, and my eye specialist at the hospital told me to think about having it removed, but it is up to me.
I've been to the opticians today for a eye test to get some new eyes, and he has worried me regarding the operation, saying there can be risks, regarding the retina.

Hi Kerry, there are risks with any op, so the optician was rather stating the obvious. With all your other eye problems you need to sit down with your consultant and ask him to explain all the complications and or risks than can happen.
I've had cataract surgery and it was a doddle
 
Thank you for your reply. I know, I will have to speak to him, got to wait for next appointment to come through. Can I just ask if you don't mind, do you have any retinopathy as you say you have had a cataract removed.

Hi @KerryH

I have had both cataracts done and they were both a 'doodle'. I also had retinopathy at the end of the 90s - had laser then and they have been stable ever since. Of course there are risks but you should ask your consultant what the chances of complications are.

Hi Kerry, no I haven't any retinopathy, but was warned having surgery could actually cause it. I'm checked every six months and so far so good. I'm steroid dependant hence the cataracts formed Had both removed with no problem.
 
@KerryH, I had a vitrectomy op and developed a cataract soon after, the Ophthalmologist did warn this would happen so was well prepared, had the cataract op and have had no issues since, that was 12 years ago now. The op itself takes no more than 15-20mins and you don't feel a thing.

As others have said, just discuss your concerns with the Ophthalmologist. Good luck.
 
Thank you so much noblehead for your reply. It has put my mind at ease knowing you have had the same operation as me prior to the cataract. It's only a small cataract, so hopefully all should be ok.
Yes, I will discuss it with my ophthalmologist at my next appointment.

Didn't have cataract but I have had my lenses replaced due to poor vision. It is the same op as for cataracts. The op took 15 minutes but you do have to have dilation drops etc so was there for about 1 and a half hours. Drops for 1 month after lovely, and it means I will never develop cataracts in the future

My non D mum had it done well over 20 years ago..? & it was a piece of p155 back then..
In her case she stopped wearing these increasingly massive lenses (glasses.) which didn't compensate for the opaqueness of her cataracts anyway..

I understand your worry.. I'm currently undergoing treatment for a swollen macula in the right eye.. Though no retinopathy. (Ironically.) Funny enough.. Now that is fun!
