Kim, can I ask, were you on a fast acting insulin before starting Novolog? The other insulins/meds you mentioned are basals, and oral lowering tablets, so if you weren't using a fast acting insulin before now, there's quite a lot of subtleties to using it properly and it might be that your doc hasn't explained it to you.
For example, if I was having a meal with X carbs, I'd take Y units for it if I knew I was going to be sitting around for the rest of the day, but if I knew that I was going to be doing an 8 mile run after it, I'd cut X down substantially, because I know that the exercise will allow me to burn off the glucose with less insulin.
Sounds like it's early days for you, but, if it's any small comfort, I did a lot of cross-country running, cycling for 50 to 80 miles, ski-ing for 6 hour stretches and hacking about in small racing dinghies all day before dx, and, after a short break to recover from the initial DKA and learning the basic rules, I carried on doing all that after dx without any difficulties. Just takes a bit of time to figure out a few adjustments which need to be made.
