My bg was 10.3 when i tested two hours after my tea, yesterday at the same time it was 5,3 but the only thing i can think of was i had chick peas with my tea tonight,i just read Eat a rainbow and there not on the list could they be the reason it's gone up ? shan x

I think chick peas have about 15-17 g of carbs in them as do most other beans so that may be the indicator. Or it may be that you just react to that kind of carbs easier than others. I usually only have chick peas in humus and have no particular effect.

Were the chick peas a substitute for other starches, bread, potatoes, rice pasta, or did you have both? A small portion should be O.K. if none of the others are involved. If not then they are not for you.
Hope this helps,
Catherine.

I'm still trying to find what i can eat i think i made a mistake Catherine i had a whole tin with scrambled eggs,i have bought a low carb book but even with my glasses my eye sight in the last few weeks has got worse so i can't read it,shan x

Never mind, you will know that you cannot do that again. A small portion would have been O.K. but you still need some vegetables for balance, mushrooms tomatoes etc. or a salad perhaps. When you buy the tinned ones make sure they are in water and not sugar water. I buy the dried ones that you soak and then simmer. You can do enough for a few days and they keep in the fridge. Trial and error is what gets you there in the end.
Regards, Catherine.

Ah think this may be why my BG was high last night as I had chick peas and rice...I am still doing the trial and error thing and definitely got it wrong last night... now I know why as it has been confusing me all day!

Hi Sam,

It has to be chick peas or rice or else you have two lots of carbs. It is confusing but you will eventually get there. Learning to drive is difficult at first but it gradually sinks in.

Hi Catherine,I always thought I was the queen of nutrition as I have been on diets for years but I was counting the chick peas as protein!!! It is sinking in slowly and I have to say I am a fab driver so there is hope

Well sam, there is protein in chick peas but it is the carb content that is the major part of them if you are trying to control those pesky blood sugars. If I use any beans, (weird that chick peas are classed as beans) then that is the main carb content of my meal.
Happy motoring,
Catherine.

Sometimes (digestive enzymes?) combinations of things can be worse than the individual carb counts may suggest. I have difficulties with wheat which are worse with wheat mixed with other carbs. It may be the combination of carbs from the rice and the peas is a particularly bad one for you. You could experiment with other beans perhaps. Or add more fat or vegetables/salad to slow the combination down.

Thanks Catherine
I will try that thanks. I was really fancying a pig out last night as I am getting sick of eating the same sort of meals. I had the biggest plate of veg with a little boiled potatoes and veggie sausage and hooray my BG was ok after it. I am such a carb fiend so will have to do something so I can eat a little bit of it.
