What are people's thinking on eating chickpeas and puy lentils on LCHF diet? I have avoided both for the past 7 months thinking that they were really high in carbs but read the back of packet of Jamie Oliver curried chickpeas which have 18.9g carbs for half a pack and his lentils which have 15g carbs for half a pack. Know this is higher than ideal but I'm going camping and need packets of things that can be easily cooked on a meths burning stove! I know I really just need to try it and test effects on BS levels but wondered whether anyone has found that these food stuffs have no or negative effects on their levels.
I love pulses, there are pros and cons. When I am trying to lose weight they can stall me so I avoid them, but when I am looking after my BG only they don't seem to affect me in the same way as other carbs do. They are rich in fiber therefore low GI and they are filling and tasty.
I would say try first and see what your meter says. Mine reacts really well to pulses so they are a treat for me from time to time. As I need to lose a lot of weight I don't consume them often.
I tried a small portion of chilli with no rice just a few kidney beans in it and my bg went into double figures and I am only pre diabetic, to be honest not tried since although I used to love chick peas and lentils.
For camping I would take nuts, 90% chocolate, nature valley protein bars are 10gms, cheese, avocadoes, tinned mackerel, whole peppers just eaten as fruit. Hard boiled eggs.
